Grown-ish star Halle Bailey Casted as Ariel in ‘The Little Mermaid’

Grown-ish star Halle Bailey Casted as Ariel in ‘The Little Mermaid’

Celebs

As the Renaissance of Disney’s classic films continues to be adapted into live-action, the cast for ‘The Little Mermaid’ was released earlier today and singer/actress Halle Bailey of R&B group Chloe x Halle has been cast as Ariel. Halle, who stars alongside older sister Chloe in the hit black-ish spinoff ‘Grown-ish’ on Freeform, joins mentor Beyoncé in the Disney live-action kingdom- set to appear in ‘The Lion King’ on July 19. She was showered with messages of congratulations on all social media platforms, however, there were some distasteful responses to Disney’s casting choice.

Yes, the role of Ariel will be played by an African American and there is not one problem with that. How about before this casting choice is made about race, we think about how well a Grammy award-winning artist would do in a role that consists of signing. Then we can note how she can inspire so many young African American girls.

“After an extensive search, it was abundantly clear that Halle possesses that rare combination of spirit, heart, youth, innocence, and substance — plus a glorious singing voice — all intrinsic qualities necessary to play this iconic role,” said Director Rob Marshall.

One of the disturbing comments made following the announcement eluded to Disney needing casting someone with nature “red hair” but the suggestions made were actresses of a white complexion. In the past, Disney has dealt with similar comments following the casting of Zendaya as Mary Jane Watson in the ‘Spider-Man’ franchise. So it seems that casting is a problem when someone of a different race takes on a role of a character that is white in other mediums but it perfectly fine when Hollywood whitewashed historical figures that are of a darker skin complexion.

The 19-year-old Halle will be joined by Melissa McCarthy, Jacob Tremblay and Awkwafina, who are each currently in talks for roles either on the live-action side or lending their voice to a CGI character according to The Hollywood Reporter. Production is slated to begin in early 2020, with longtime music conductor for Disney movies Alan Menken teaming up with Lin-Manuel Miranda for the music.

Netflix’s “Beats” Takes in Depth Look at the After Effects of Gang Violence

Netflix’s “Beats” Takes in Depth Look at the After Effects of Gang Violence

Celebs

The traditional model of promoting a film is slowly becoming a thing of the past as the rise of films premiere on streaming services such as Netflix. This opportunity is unlike any before, directors now have the choice to either shop the film to different studios who then may ask to make a change or you can go directly to Netflix with all creative control. Well, I’m happy to say, Chris Robinson, director of new Netflix movie “Beats” chooses the latter. “Beats” is a film that brings notice to the escalating violence in the streets of Chicago, while other films and series have done the same like Lena Waithe’s “The Chi” or Spike Lee’s “Chi-Raq.” As “the ultimate ode to Chicago’s South Side,” this film shines a light on the devastating effects of gang violence and tells the story of to have a family can come to grips with losing a loved one.

A teenage music prodigy August Monroe (Khalil Everage) was involved in a gang shooting leaving him traumatized and older sister died, directly following his actions of urinating on a wall tagged by a rival gang. Eighteen months later, August becomes secluded to a cramped apartment sitting in front of his sampler and keyboard, crafting hip-hop beats and hooks, as he did with his sister.

He would later form an unlikely friendship with a struggling producer Romelo Reese (Anthony Anderson) who’s now a security guard at August’s high schools when his estranged wife, Vanessa (Emayatzy Corinealdi), a school administrator, asks him to track down no-show students. Once arriving at August’s door he hears the beats through the walls, stirring memories of his former life as a music producer and manager. He knows talent when he hears it and August has it.

Their first encounter didn’t go over very well, Romelo snuck into August room to compliment him on the beats by patting him on the back. August immediately has a panic attack seeing an unfamiliar face in his safe space his mother, Carla (Uzo Aduba) had to calm him down and kicked Romelo out of their house. The persistent of Romelo eventually grew on August as the two united by their mutual love of hip-hop, they try to free each other from the demons of their past and break into the city’s music scene.

August, His love interest Niyah (Ashley Jackson), and Romelo Reese (Anthony Anderson)

The film itself puts the microscope on how people can be negatively affected by gang violence, August who was directly involved and watching a loved one died and being shot himself formed PTSD ( Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) symptoms, the fear of leaving his home, big crowds, and loud noises. His Mother Carla was an overprotective parent who didn’t want to lose another child, in turn, she became an enabler to August’s PTSD. Without the help of an outside force like Romelo pushing August to come out of the house and go after what he wants, his journey to normalcy would have never happened. The underlying meaning of the film is that sometimes it takes one person to push you towards the greatness they see in you.

“Beats” is available to stream on Netflix now.

Alternate Verse Kanye West Name Drops Drake and J. Cole

Alternate Verse Kanye West Name Drops Drake and J. Cole

Celebs

As Drake is still enjoying the high of the Toronto Raptors winning an NBA championship and finally dropping those two tracks he promised fans last Thursday. To quote him “Still on top and these ni**as wanna swap…” to steal some of his shine, HipHop-N-More leaked a full version to an alternate version of Kanye West verse on Pusha-T’s Daytona track “What Would Meek Do? This version had lyrics aimed at both J. Cole and Drake setting Twitter a blazed.

The beef between Drake and Kayne has been while documented, subtle jabs, airing of dirty laundry, and dissing of one another shoe companies through lyrics, Kayne decided to play on the rumors of Drake leaving Nike for Adidas claiming he wears Yeezy sneakers while being signed to Nike:

Kanye hasn’t forgotten J. Cole “False prophets” which many feels was a diss, during an interview with Charlamagne, Kayne felt Cole was being a hater which addressed in these lines:

“I’m too complex for ComplexCon

You heard Cole on that song, he was tryna hate”

But Kanye shots at Nike didn’t stop there claiming the brand signed his protege Travis Scott and former manager Don C, because Adidas takeover was inevitable with Kayne on the roster:

“How can one man take a company down?

I can see Nike contemplatin’ that

“Like bro, we’re fucked, what’s the best plan?

I don’t know, hire Ye’s best man

Maybe sign Travis, sign Don C”

While the snippet may be old, a new Kanye track called “Brothers” featuring Charlie Wilson is set to debut during the season premiere of Irv Gotti’s BET anthology series “Tales” on July 2. Below is Rap Genius’ timeline of the beef between the two legends.

Trinkets Tackles Ethos of Shoplifters

Trinkets Tackles Ethos of Shoplifters

Celebs

New Netflix series “Trinkets” is an adapted of the YA novel by Kirsten Smith of the same name,  following Elodie (Brianna Hildebrand), Moe (Kiana Madeira), and Tabitha (Quintessa Swindell) who all come from different social circles but became friends thanks to their shoplifting addiction.

Being the new kid can be one of the biggest challenges of anyone, but imagine being that new kid in high school. Elodie is forced to adjust to her new family and surroundings of Portland, Oregon following her mother’s death in a car accident. The pain of loss still being new the way she grieves is to shoplift. In a Shoplifter Anonymous meeting, she said

“Trinkets” is an artistic look at how the habit of shoplifting can come into effect when someone is trying to regain a sense of control, Kristen Smith thinks the idea of shoplifting is particularly appealing to audiences that might be grappling with similar issues.

“A lot of young women are perhaps drawn to it because they don’t have enough control and power so it’s a way to seize it even if it’s misguided. It’s a way to fill some holes that you have inside with possessions,” Smith said. “I really wanted to get into what are the things that make you susceptible to this addiction. It’s a real thing. We wanted to explore all of these things in a way as earnest and true as possible.”

Tabitha’s reasoning for shoplifting is a need for control, as she feels the control has been lost in her abusive relationship. As she begins to find that power throughout the series her shoplifting lessons.

Elodie whose life is somewhat coming apart at the seams feel in order for her to take back what she has lost it is only right to take items away from others and the feeling it gave her is euphoric. In the first episode Elodie leaves a party she was unwillingly dragged too and wines up in front of a convenience store. As she goes down the aisle lifting a slim jim here and a pack of starburst their music begins to play as if she were performing an elaborate dance in front of an audience. That feeling of bliss is cut short after running into the security guard who then says “Really?”

Even when we see her suitcase full of items she’s lifted, the smile on her face is one that comes from great accomplishment.

“Some start after a loss, trauma, betrayal, or some difficult transition in their life,” he says. While there’s a buffet of maladaptive coping mechanisms people may gravitate towards during troubling times, such as substance abuse or gambling, shoplifting provides a specific type of thrill,” said Terry Shulman, author of Something for Nothing: Shoplifting Addiction and Recovery.

Shulman hopes that people who see Trinkets and are also struggling with shoplifting might be compelled to find support.
