The Minnesota Timberwolves came into this off-season, knowing that they needed to improve at the point guard position. What fans in Minnesota didn’t know was that the Timberwolves were gonna make such a big splash in this off-season. The other night the Minnesota Timberwolves traded Julius Randall to the Brooklyn Nets to move back in the draft for the 33rd pick in a move that was to dump the salary and free up money.

A lot of fans didn’t know the direction that the team was going in until they signed Ayo Dosunmu back with a five-year $112 million contract to stay with the Minnesota Timberwolves. He showed a great leap this season with the Timberwolves and got rewarded for his playoff run where he exceeded all expectations when Anthony Edwards went down with injury. Fans are excited to bring them back, but we’re still questioning if Tim Connelly was going to be able to fill the void for this team that was needed at the point guard position. All signs were leading to Naz Reid stepping into a bigger role in the starting lineup to play alongside Anthony Edwards and Jaden McDaniels. What everybody didn’t know is that Tim Connelly was still working on things behind closed doors and one thing about him. He’s gonna always swing for the fences no matter what.

In the draft, the Minnesota Timberwolves use the 33rd pick to select Isaiah Evans from Duke University as he was going to be able to produce scoring at a high rate as soon as possible to help that second unit. With the 59th pick the Minnesota Timberwolves selected Trey Kaufman-Renn who was a senior this year at Purdue University but stepped up in a major way for the program over the last couple of years cementing why Minnesota selecting him.

Following the NBA draft, there was a lot of speculation in trade talk surrounding LaMelo Ball from the Charlotte Hornets. The All-Star guard had an amazing season this year for the Hornets as he was able to play 72 games this past season any average 20.1 points per game with 7.1 assists per game and almost 5 rebounds per game as well. Early on Thursday morning, Tim Connelly was able to make a home run swing as he was able to combine Naz Reid and Julius Randle’s salary cap to pry LaMelo Ball from the Charlotte Hornets in a huge trade that will give the Timberwolves the point guard of the future that they really needed to pair with Anthony Edwards.

This trade comes at the expensive Naz Reid, who is a fan favorite in a beloved Timberwolf that will forever be ingrained in the history of this organization. People were really hurt, knowing that Naz Reid was in the trade and will be going to Charlotte, but in order to get better the Timberwolves knew they had to make a business decision and not make it personal. Naz Reid as a fan favorite as they were able to do tattoos and beach towels for somebody that was iconic in the city and somebody that the Timberwolves were able to make a household name in the NBA.

Naz Reid went from the chubby kid from LSU to the well polished slim point forward that won 6 man of the year while being a huge fan favorite. After this trade, the Minnesota Timberwolves need to get into the market and go get a power forward in order to stay true to the big man wave that the NBA is on right now. Naz Reid will be missed in the locker room as well because he was a true leader and a true fan favorite. It was a true pleasure covering him throughout the years and I appreciate all of his professionalism and he will be missed but just know that tribute video in Target Center when the Hornets come back to play the Timberwolves is going to probably blow the roof off.

The Timberwolves will turn the page to LaMelo Ball now as they get a dynamic point guard who can create his own shot and be able to get his teammates involved. LaMelo is going to be amazing when it comes to playing alongside Rudy Gobert as he’s gonna be able to give him lobs all night long and be able to find them in spots that previous point guards haven’t been able too. I’m looking forward to the tutelage that LaMelo Ball can get for Mike Conley as well knowing that you have a veteran that’s been through it all in your corner is going to be extremely important for his development in the winning system.

The obvious reason why the Minnesota Timberwolves made the trade is because they wanna make sure that Anthony Edwards has somebody that he can get the ball to in playoff when teams double team him. Adding LaMelo Ball will unlock Anthony Edwards game on a whole new  level as he can play off the ball even more now I’m excited to see what the future holds for the best back court in the NBA currently. Check out LaMelo Ball’s highlights from this season and see exactly what I’m talking about when it comes to making his players around him better.

The Minnesota Timberwolves were linked to a couple of players in trade talks but ultimately it came down to get in the point guard of the future with LaMelo Ball. Some of the names that the Minnesota Timberwolves tried to pair Anthony Edwards with were as followed Jaylen Brown from the Boston Celtics, Josh Giddy from the Chicago Bulls and Kyrie Irving from the Dallas Mavericks per Jon Krawczynski from The Athletic. Tim Connelly was able to look into every situation and made a tough decision when it came to adding LaMelo Ball to the Minnesota Timberwolves while losing a fan favorite.

He took a swing and hit a home run and that’s all you can ask for from a general manager of an NBA team. The Minnesota Timberwolves still have some more moves to make, but there should be a lot of excitement around the back court, and now they have to take advantage of adding a power forward and building the depth of the bench if they still want to be a title contender in the Western Conference.
