Week-In Review: The United States Vs. Billie Holiday

Week-In Review: The United States Vs. Billie Holiday

Celebs

“The United States Vs. Billie Holiday,” is a  biographical drama film about the life of the iconic jazz singer Billie Holiday, directed by Lee Daniels, and starring Grammy-nominated singer Andra Day ( “Rise Up”) in her acting debut.  Based on the book Chasing the Scream: The First and Last Days of the War on Drugs by Johann Hari. The film itself concentrates on the last dozen years of Holiday’s life as she’s being targeted by a government investigation due in large part to her song “Strange Fruit” after the governments failed attempt at censorship. With great use of flash backs to flesh out the story viewers are able to see Holiday’s less than perfect childhood, struggles with substances, and her professional career highlighting a performances at Carnegie Hall.

Initially set to be theatrically released by Paramount Pictures, the film was sold to Hulu in December 2020, and digitally released in the United States as of February 26, 2021. Receiving mixed reviews from critics, who praised Day’s performance but criticized the direction and screenplay as unfocused. At the 78th Golden Globe Awards, it earned nominations for Best Actress – Motion Picture Drama (Day) and Best Original Song (“Tigress and Tweed”).

I can agree that Daniels careens all over the map with stylistic inconsistency and narrative dysfunction, settling for episodic electricity in the absence of a robust connective thread. As well as him leaning on the cliché of childhood trauma is followed by success and its consequences, usually including addiction and love trouble to paint the Lady as the victims. I will say that this story depicts heroine as a crutch to deal with the trauma

(Before reading any further I would like to issue a spoiler warning as I will be reviewing the film)

The film begins by placing us in New York City on May 3, 1957 as  Billie Holiday (Andra Day) sits down with journalist Reginald Lord Devine (Leslie Jordan), for an interview to discuss the song “Strange Fruit” and the problem this ballard has brought to Lady Day. The song it condemns the U.S. history of lynching Black people, when asked why she was so intended on signing this song. Holiday simply respond ” How you ever seen a lynching? It’s about human rights, the government forgets that sometimes.”  viewers are seamlessly transported 10 years earlier at the Cafe Society.

This where our story begins where were introduced to Billie Holiday’s bandmates, friends, current husband James Monroe (Erik LaRay Harvey), and manager Joe Glaser ( Dusan Dukic). We also see Jimmy Fletcher (Trevante Rhodes) a army man whose just returned home from deployment enjoying the soulful sound of Billie Holiday. Following her performance Fletcher tried to meet Holliday backstage before being turned away by Mr. Monroe.

The friction of Monroe, Holiday, and Glaser relationship is made apparent when she fights to have “Strange Fruit” on her set lists after being scratched, both Monroe and Glaser voice there onions on why it isn’t a good idea to perform that song because of the trouble it brings. But unbeknownst to Holiday, her husband has been dealing with Commissioner of the U.S. Treasury Department’s Federal Bureau of Narcotics Harry Anslinger (Garrett Hedlund) in order to get her to stop sing a song that Anslinger believes it make a lot of people to start thinking the wrong things such as fighting for equality.

Jumping forward to May 27, 1947 at the Earle Theater, Philadelphia in front of a packed house with audience and police men who rushed the stage ready to arrest her for attempting to sing “Strong Fruit,”due to the message with in the song that the investigation union deems a starting gun for the Civil Rights Movement. One of many potential uprising of African Americans J. Edgar Hoover wanted to stop. This forceful silencing of someone right to freedom of speak is akin to Rapper group N.W.A. be banned from performing “F**k The Police,” Holiday proceeded to sing “Strange Fruit,” but was abruptly stop by saxophonist Lester Young (Tyler James Williams) who managed to her Holiday escape arrest.  However, she would later be arrested and charged with possession of narcotic, Heroine to be more exact by Fletcher during a raid of her apartment were she was staying in.

Fletcher reveals himself to be an FBI operative tasked by Anslinger to arrest Holiday on drug chargers. Holiday is then in front of a judge under the impression she would be sent to a medical faculty for addicts but was instead giving a year and one day in prison.

The United States vs. Billie Holiday' review: Andra Day delivers the high notes in Lee Daniels' disjointed biography - CNN

After Holiday’s release from imprisonment in what was like a court ordered rehab, she seemed to be health and ready to continue to bring awareness to the lynching of black men in the south. However, her imprisonment was a strategy employed by the government to take away her New York City cabaret card making it illegal for her to perform and essentially make money. Bring us to Holidays next Husband/Manager John Levy (Tone Bell), who set up gigs for Holiday in New York. The relationship between the two was short lived on screen but his biggest role was working in tandem with Anslinger to planting opium on Holiday to send her back to prison. This plan fell through when Fletcher admitted that the drugs didn’t belong to her and were planted. She would then be acquitted of the charge.

Because of his inability to lie on the stand, Aslinger tasked Fletcher with following and eventually infiltrate Holiday’s inner circle while she was on a country wide tour and report any drug use. Fletcher was already on the fence about this because his goal was to clear Harlem of drugs while his superiors motivations where to silence anyone sparking the idea of change happening in America. As Fletcher remained around Holiday, a romance was built between the two. He’s the only man she had a relationship with who doesn’t also beat, degrade and exploit her.

Holiday mentally shifted however after witnessing the aftermath of the lynchings she was trying to make public aware through her song. A horrifying site indeed Holiday wanted to find comfort in heroine again but Fletcher stop her. The following scene take all that emotion of the lynching imprinted on viewers minds and give us the first successful performance of “Strange Fruit.” The weight of those lyrics are heavy and the silence between Andra Day voice echoing throughout the auditorium is mesmerizing.

Fletcher and Holiday’s relationship continues to grow to the point he becomes the least interesting member of Holiday’s entourage. But as we know there aren’t any happy endings in real life Holiday is whisked away by her third and final husband Louis McKay (Rob Morgan) who he comes to pick her up when she stranded on the side of the road because he tour bus broke down.

McKay and Holiday traveled and eventually toured in Europe for sometime but McKay abusive behavior and addiction was on full display during a transition montage. The couple would be were arrested together for possessing narcotics. McKay was willing to work with Anslinger to find Holidays suppliers.

Toward the end of the film we are able to visibly see Holidays health deteriorate to the point she’s is hospitalize. Fletcher was by Holiday side until McKay and Anslinger paid her a visit to get the names of her suppliers, prompting that as soon as they have that information the government will leave her be. Holiday rejected the offer and GeForce the idea that the government didn’t care about the heroine but would much rather have “Strange Fruit,” died and burned.

What processed would be the terrible fact the Narcotics agents, arrested her as she laid dying — she was 44 when she died, of liver disease, in 1959 —  claiming to have found heroine on her.

MLB: Three Most Improved Teams Heading into 2021 Season

MLB: Three Most Improved Teams Heading into 2021 Season

Featured

Major League Baseball’s spring training took full effect last week as camps are now full with pitchers, catchers, and all position players. Spring training games will be beginning soon, which means we’re just a few, short rom the 2021 season. With the regular season around the corner, now is great time to speculate which teams improved the most heading into the 2021 season.

The offseason got off to a rather slow start, but teams kicked things into full gear as the calendar turned the last page of 2020. The league has seen some big signings and blockbuster trades Most of the league’s top free-agents have found places to call home.

Here are the three teams that improved the most prior to the 2021 season.

The New York Mets under New Ownership

Under the guidance of new principal owner Steve Cohen, the New York Mets completely changed their narrative this offseason. From lovable losers to a team that others should fear in free agency. Cohen and his staff made this clear with the offseason’s biggest blockbuster trade, acquiring superstar Francisco Lindor and Carlos Carrasco from the Cleveland Indians

New York now has one of the deepest starting rotations in baseball on top of a young core of superstar talent. Lindor sits as the face of the franchise now while the Mets added some serious depth to the roster. The Mets may have missed out on Trevor Bauer and JT Realmuto, but this roster is drastically improved after bringing in names such as Trevor May, James McCann, Jonathan Villar, Albert Almora Jr., and Aaron Loup.

From a team that finished eight games under .500 and fourth in the NL East to a potential World Series candidate, the Mets are the most improved team heading into 2021.

The San Diego Padres are serious World Series contenders

The San Diego Padres began their serious aspirations for a World Series title back in 2019. Over the past two seasons, Fernando Tatis Jr. has emerged as a bonafide superstar while San Diego also brought in big names like Mike Clevinger and Manny Machado.

Despite the additional star power, the Padres fell short last season. San Diego finished six games back of the eventual-champion Dodgers. Instead of remaining with that roster construction, management went back to the drawing board. The Padres are now one of the biggest offseason spenders.

In December, San Diego brought in starting pitching help with Blake Snell and Yu Darvish. The team also solidified its bullpen with the addition of veteran Mark Melancon. Padres management didn’t shy away from improving its lineup and positional player depth. Japanese sensation Ha-Seong Kim was signed for depth behind Tatis Jr. and Machado while he’ll compete for a starting role at second base. Jurickson Profar was also re-signed.

San Diego’s biggest offseason splash came with the record-breaking 14-year, $340 million contract extension for Tatis Jr. The Padres now have a deep roster, from top to bottom, and will play meaningful baseball this October.

Toronto Blue Jays: inking their top target

The Toronto Blue Jays may have had greater aspirations heading into this offseason, but this team still earns a spot on this list. The Blue Jays signed their biggest free-agent target in George Springer. Adding Springer meant adding a superstar talent to rally the franchise around. Toronto also brought in Marcus Semien, another of the league’s top free agents, giving this franchise a number of different All-Star level talents.

Ken Giles did depart in free agency, however, the Blue Jays added a number of bullpen depth pieces in Kirby Yates, Tyler Chatwood, and David Phelps. While the franchise was unable to sure up its starting pitching behind Hyun-Jin Ryu, they did add Robbie Ray and Steven Matz. Both Ray and Matz could rally for successful seasons next year, as this pair both own at least one season with sub-3.50 ERAs.

Toronto’s improvement makes the AL East interesting behind both the New York Yankees, Tampa Bay Rays, and the Boston Red Sox did not make this list, but they were also busy this offseason, and it should be a year of competitive baseball in the division.

SneakerReporter Presents – The Next Hot Hand: Immanuel Quickley

SneakerReporter Presents – The Next Hot Hand: Immanuel Quickley

Featured

We’re just approaching the All-Star Break into the NBA Season and there’s already been much to talk about, from Brooklyn’s Big 3 to how the health and safety protocols are impacting everyone league wide. With the new season as well as the New Year, we here at SneakerReporter present to you a new segment to the platform, The Next Hot Hand.

__________________________________________________

Typically fans and media alike tend to focus in on the premier, quintessential names around the league like the LeBron James’ and the Kevin Durants’, and rightfully so. However with the league getting younger and younger as the season’s come and go, The Next Hot Hand we will be highlighting the league’s underdogs and up-and-coming talents with a breakdown provided with their basketball career history thus far and an overall look at these individuals as players. With that all out of the way, now we take a look into our first subject of discussion in The Next Hot Hand, New York Knicks’ Rookie Guard, Immanuel Quickley.

__________________________________________________

Immanuel Quickley

Immanuel Quickley of Havre de Grace, Maryland has had a surprisingly quiet yet illustrious career leading up to the NBA, from scoring the bucket to win the BCL Championship as a sophomore in high school, which ultimately led him to receiving All-Metro Player of the Year recognition, to being a McDonald’s All-American coming out of high school. After a year in Kentucky where he averaged 5.2 points, 1.8 rebounds, and 1.2 assists as a Freshman, he immediately flipped the switch going into his Sophomore season. Quickley ended the regular season with 16.1 points and 4.2 rebounds, named 2020’s SEC Player of the Year as well as named to First-team All-SEC. With an impressive season and all the confidence in the world, Quickley declares for the 2020 NBA Draft to get selected as the 25th pick to play in the Mecca of Basketball, as a New York Knick.

Quickley gained the love of Knicks fans and teammates rather, well, quickly. It didn’t take long for him to adjust to the league, having scored a season/career high 31 points against the Portland Trailblazers only 18 games into the season. Everyone league wide has taken notice of the young 21 year-old, being seen and talked about on a multitude of media outlets. Teammate and first time All-Star Julius Randle took to New Orleans Pelicans’ Guard and NBA Veteran JJ Redicks’ podcast, The Old Man and the Three, and when was asked about Quickley, said,

“Dude works extremely hard. He’ll get shots up after the game. He’ll be early to the gym, he’ll stay late. And I don’t care who you are as a player, if you got that type of attitude/mindset, you’re gonna have a long career. That’s what I like about Quick (Quickley), his mindset and approach to the game of basketball.”

Julius Randle

It is clear to us all that the New York Knicks have found themselves the epitome of a gym rat, in the best meaning of the phrase possible. There has been testament after testament regarding Quickley’s work ethic and drive to be the best basketball player he can be, especially now that he has the facilities and training staff to do so. According to reports, Quickley never really had a go to trainer prior to his time in the league, and it is because of this he found himself reaching out to YouTuber, NBA Playmaker, renowned trainer and overall hooper in Devin Williams (IN THE LAB). Williams holds an online series called The Academy, where he takes players worldwide and shows them a high level of learning when it comes to the game of basketball. If you know Devin Williams at all you would know that he has an exceptional basketball mind, and surely Quickley picked up a thing or two from such experiences.

Quickley has proven thus far that he is not only capable but he is confident that he belongs in the league, which can be said for all players. But being able to just look a little bit deeper into these players’ stories we see the dedication and work it takes to get to where they are. It seems quite apparent that Quickley has the potential to be a franchise player in the NBA, and with his ability to play and his drive to get better, that may just be something in the foreseeable future. Ultimately, this is just a minor look into his efforts as an NBA player and the fact that he is only in his first year truly shows that the sky is the limit for Immanuel Quickley, SneakerReporter’s first Next Hot Hand.
