Netflix continues to debut new movies on Fridays that have the quality of a big screen film. This week Adam Sandler premieres his latest film from Happy Madison Productions Murder Mystery, Starting Sandler (Nick Spitz) and co-star Jennifer Aniston (Audrey Spitz).

This Rom-com pokes fun at the genre while still paying homage to Agatha Christie’s mysteries, the screenplay by James Vanderbilt, have all the character types associated with the genre including: the family patriarch and his much younger fiancée (who may or may not have her eyes on his wealth); the socialite; the spurned son; the foreign dignitary; the world-class athlete who seems to not speak English; the stolid bodyguard; and so on and so forth.

Nick and his wife Audrey go to Europe to celebrate the wedding anniversary but find themselves in a whodunit situation after accepting an invitation from a mysterious stranger, Charles Cavendish (Luke Evans) to stay on Billionaire Malcolm Quince (Terence Stamp) yacht for the weekend. Quince ends up dead following his announcement to his relatives and friends.

In a twist of fate, it’s up to Spitzes’ to solve the mystery after being framed for the murder. Who better to clear their name than a police sergeant, and a reader obsessed with mystery novels. Nick and Audrey are essentially are the audience participating in the most over the top dinner party game, filled with guesses of the killer’s identity, piece together clues, culminating in the classic car chase scene about three notches down from the Fast and Furious franchise.

Sandler deliveries on that lucrative ongoing partnership with Netflix, after some forgettable and lackluster film. A few hidden gems in the film are Boon a sardonic detective who blows smoke rings wherever he goes and Akhtar the maharajah, introduces himself to the Spitzes by bowing three times, as they awkwardly reciprocate, he burst into laughter and says “when a brown person bows, white people bow back” playing on the tropes of stereotypical characters or turning them on their head.

Murder Mystery is now streaming on Netflix.

Today Anderson .Paak’s band Free Nationals have released “Time,” featuring the late Mac Miller as well as Kali Uchis. Marking Mac’s first official posthumous release. Premiered on Zane Lowe’s Beats 1 Radio show as his World Record this is the groups first official release since 2018’s “Beauty & Essex.”

Mac Miller passed away in September 2018 of an accidental overdose at 26, the lost has been felt throughout the Hip-Hop community. Leaving a void and longing to hear unreleased material from the late rapper, .Paak, who dedicated the song “Dang!” to Miller during his Coachella performance this year  went to Twitter to share the announcement of Free Nationals new track writing, “6/12 be ready.”

“Mac Miller was a humble rock star, he was a rapper’s rapper, he was a[n] actor, a comedian, a musical genius […] Mac Miller was a brother, he was my friend,” said .Paak “I loved him and I still love him.”

Over a smooth mellowly groove, Kali provides her lush vocals, as Mac raps about the struggles of a relationship and how both sides are dealing with it (“I’m making the wrong decisions and you sick of it all/But don’t leave me, don’t leave me”), which Kali doubles down on with the hook (“I gotta take some time to grow/But I don’t want to let you go”).

There have been many projects started in Mac Miller name such as MusiCares launched the  Mac Miller Legacy Fund to help young people who are struggling with substance abuse. (For more information, visit here) As well as a documentary on the Pittsburgh rapper, which last week was halted at the request of his family and management.

Cyrus’ Long Overdue Apology

Cyrus’ Long Overdue Apology

Celebs

Once trying to distance herself from the genre, Miley Cyrus is making her return to Hip-Hop with the released She Is Coming”  EP, which includes contributions from hip-hop stars Swae Lee, Ghostface Killah, and Mike Will Made-It. The reception is lukewarm at best following her comments in 2017  in a Billboard interview, claiming she was no longer interested in rap because of the materialistic and sex-driven messages.

“I also love that new Kendrick [Lamar] song [“Humble”]: ‘Show me somethin’ natural like ass with some stretch marks.’ I love that because it’s not ‘Come sit on my dick, suck on my cock.’ I can’t listen to that anymore,” she told Billboard. “That’s what pushed me out of the hip-hop scene a little. It was too much ‘Lamborghini, got my Rolex, got a girl on my cock’—I am so not that.”

The tone-deaf comments made in the interview had critics labeling Cyrus as a culture vulture, someone to use the genre of Hip-Hop in order to sell. A year after leaving hip-hop behind for more hypothetically lucrative pastures, for a folkier (and whiter) sound. Cyrus is staging her return.

Cyrus has owned up to her mistake in the comments section of a fan-made video titled Miley Cyrus Is My Problematic Fav…Sorry. Cyrus admitted she still had a lot to learn and acknowledged her privilege as a white musician, writing:

“Just watched your video. Thank you for giving me this opportunity to speak up. Being silent is not like me at all. I am aware of my platform and have always used it the best way I know how and to shine a light on injustice. I want to start with saying I am sorry. I own the fact that saying … “this pushed me out of the hip hop scene a little” was insensitive as it is a privilege to have the ability to dip in and out of “the scene.” There are decades of inequality that I am aware of, but still have alot learn about. Silence is a part of the problem and I refuse to be quiet anymore. My words became a divider in a time where togetherness and unity is crucial. I can not change what I said at that time, but I can say I am deeply sorry for the disconnect my words caused. Simply said: I fucked up and I sincerely apologize. I’m committed to using my voice for healing, change, and standing up for what’s right. Miley”

As the saying goes man lie, women lie, but numbers don’t; her sixth studio album “Younger Now”, was lackluster debuted at number five on the Billboard 200 and sold 45,000 units in its first week, and failing to go gold. Compared to “Bangerz”, which went number one with 270,000 in sales its first week and certified triple platinum. Needless to say, this genre brought her the most success she’s seen in her career, with more money to be made Cyrus’ pivot back to hip-hop is understandable.

Her fortune isn’t solely from music, is safe to say that the artists of Roc Nation are the top of the class when it comes to expansion. Robyn Rihanna Fenty best known as Rihanna uses the name Fenty as for many ventures beyond the music studio.

“I couldn’t imagine a better partner both creatively and business-wise, and I’m ready for the world to see what we have built together.” said Rihanna in a statement when the fashion house was announced.

LVMH has become known for offering more inclusive shades of makeup than other brands, with 40 different options in foundation.

Hip-Hop was nothing short of iconic in 2018 with the number of releases from new and old artist alike, the question for 2019 is can it match the hectic breakneck pace of 2018? While that question has yet to be answered there will be the albums/project you should watch out for in the month of June. With entries coming from Tyga, Chris Brown, Freddie Gibbs and many more.

June 6: Tyga – “Legendary”

June 21: Chris Brown – “Indigo”

“I’m just letting y’all know this s**t coming out June 21,” Chris Brown exclaimed during his 30th birthday party on May 5th.

June 28: Freddie Gibbs & Madlib – Bandana”

Image result for Freddie Gibbs & Madlib – “Bandana”After more than a decade of grinding as an independent artist, Freddie Gibbs inked a deal with RCA/Keep Cool in March to release a new collaborative album, ‘Bandana.’ It will be his second with Madlib, and follows the pair’s acclaimed 2014 set, ‘Piñata.’

“We up there with [’90s hip-hop duo] Pete Rock & CL Smooth,” he says. “We the best doing it [today]. You got Run the Jewels, and I love what they do, but what me and Madlib do? It stands alone.”

His unfiltered, in-your-face attitude, Gibbs mirrors the grime and grit of 1990s rap and ‘Bandana,’ out June 28, stands in stark contrast to today’s SoundCloud rap scene.

June 28: Mustard – “Perfect Ten”

A confirmed released on June 28 by way of the producer Mustard’s Instagram,  Perfect Ten album artwork features a young DJ Mustard. Migos collaboration ‘Pure Water,’ and ‘100 Bands’ with Quavo, 21 Savage, Meek Mill, and YG will keep fans craving for more until the album’s release.
