SR – NBA Prime Time Preview: Los Angeles Clippers at Boston Celtics

Featured

Coming off of a blown comeback attempt and loss on the road to the undersized Houston Rockets, the 37-16 Celtics want to end their first half of the season on a strong note, but will have to do so with some adversity on their shoulders in tonight’s interconference matchup. The 37-17 Clippers take a trip to the wintry Northeast to take on another iteration of the hospital Celtics while looking to also end their first half of the season strong as both teams are playing their final game before this weekend’s star-studded shenanigans in Chicago.

These two teams, separated by a lone loss, are both the third seed in their conferences, respectively. And while just in time for the break, Jaylen Brown’s healing of his calf will keep him out of this game, and while Boston will be without his usual 20.2 ppg. off 40.2 percent shooting, it’ll be up to Brad Stevens again to concoct some combination of Gordon Hayward and Grant Williams to substitute his efforts on both the offensive and defensive side of the game. For the rest of that vaunted frontcourt that’s caused troubles in the process of ripping through whatever defensive coverages they see, Jayson Tatum, the first-time All-Star, is looking to bounce back from his subpar shooting night against Houston on Tuesday.

And what better way to improve that characteristic of consistency than to go toe-to-toe with the Clippers’ coveted 2x Defensive Player of the Year Kawhi Leonard and a competitive foe in Paul George, who’s always found a way to go back and forth with Tatum in the All-Star’s short three-year career.

Thursday’s contest concludes the season series between the teams after the Celtics fell to the Clippers 107-104 in an entertaining game that ended in overtime in the Staples Center on Nov. 20, and Jayson Tatum led Boston with 30 points in that game while Lou Williams turned on a second gear for L.A. to score 27 points off the bench.

Going into that Houston game earlier this week, Tatum had a streak of nine straight games scoring 20 or more points that was finally snapped with him being held to 15 on 5-of-15 shooting and with a surprise return of Marcus Morris Sr. to the Boston parquet, as he was picked up before last Thursday’s trade deadline in a deal with the Knicks, scoring the ball with a shrunken floor could be a difficult task. But, as the third-best defensive team in the league, it will be interesting to see if Boston can uphold the fort against three of the league’s most frightening scorers in Williams, George, Landry Shamet, and Lou Williams off the bench.

Tip-off for the last televised TNT basketball event until All-Star Weekend is at 8:00 p.m ET.

NBA All-Star Weekend Releases

NBA All-Star weekend is the brightest stage for signature sneakers. For decades hoopers have been pulling out heat exclusively for the big game, who can forget T-Mac pulling out the mismatched T-Mac 3s in 2004 or Nike’s interstellar themed pack in 2013? This All-Star weekend is set to be one of the biggest in recent days with a slew of releases flooding the streets.

Jordan Brand with it’s ironclad Chicago roots fittingly takes over the weekend with their ‘Unite’ pack and the Chicago collaborators collection. Featuring work from the legendary Virgil Abloh to the the rising multimedia brand Lyrical Lemonade, Jordan Brand is firing on all cylinders this year capping off their All-Star weekend with the first ever retro of the Nike Air Ship.

Though Jordan made be Windy City made, Jordan Brand isn’t the only company blazing the courts. Pusha and Dame whipped up a Dame 6 collaboration, New Balance joins forces with Joe Freshgoods and Don’t Be Mad for a pink-tinged Omn1 covered with unsmiling faces reflecting Kawhi’s unflappable demeanor. adidas even celebrates Chicago hero and former MVP Derrick Rose with a retro of his first signature in the colorway he wore during his first All-Star game.

SR – NBA Prime Time Preview: Los Angeles Lakers at Denver Nuggets

SR – NBA Prime Time Preview: Los Angeles Lakers at Denver Nuggets

Featured

What treat could possibly be better than one of the last two games on prime time television being a battle for supremacy in the West? The 40-12 Lakers and 38-16 Nuggets will gift NBA fans that very privilege, as the last game on the schedule before the All-Star break for both the Lakers and Nuggets takes place at 10:00 p.m. ET on ESPN.

The Nuggets frontcourt, mainly led by the (debatable) best center in the NBA Nikola Jokic, will have to make way against the intimidating and physically imposing Lakers frontcourt, composed of LeBron James and Anthony Davis. Throughout this season’s first half, very few, if any teams, have found the blueprint to topple the duo, and as they continue to beat their opponents with the best record in the West, they’ve looked more and more like the clear favorites to run away with the conference crown.

And it’s safe to say that, along with the rest of the NBA for that matter, these past two-to-three weeks have been pretty hard, since LeBron and his Laker teammates are still mourning the loss of their dear friend, Lakers legend Kobe Bryant. James has played hard in his old Team USA teammate’s honor, averaging a little under 24 points per contest while leading the league in assists where some prognosticate that James has been coasting in the waning moments of his most recent games. Davis, on the other hand, has been the lifeblood of this Lakers offense as a near walking double-double with his averaged 24.6 points per game and 8.6 rebounds in the five games they’ve played in the month of February.

But hold on. These Nuggets are nothing to fuss at. Jokic and Jamal Murray have been cooking the competition and it’s looking like Mike Malone’s squad has finally corrected those early-season idiosyncrasies that resulted in losses to begin the year. Specifically, both Jokic and Murray have looked like their counterparts just a season ago during Denver’s four-game winning streak. While Jokic has averaged 25.3 points, 12.8 rebounds, and 9.5 assists in his last four, Murray has averaged a head-turning 28.3 points and 5.3 assists himself, shooting 48.4 percent from deep.

Obviously, as we’ve come to know for years, playing inside the Pepsi Center is a clear advantage. Just playing any sport in a city/state that’s 5,280 feet above sea level is impairing enough to make any opponent’s game regress at the moment, but a Nuggets win in front of all of their loyal supporters is a huge accolade and confidence booster for a team that could very well be in the conference finals picture, and if it were to come against the team that leads the conference in wins? That’s even more incentive for Jokic and crew to give their all to get their 39th win of the year.

SR – NBA Prime Time Preview: Milwaukee Bucks at Indiana Pacers

SR – NBA Prime Time Preview: Milwaukee Bucks at Indiana Pacers

Featured

The Bucks will still be without Giannis Antetokounmpo in his brief absence due to the birth of his first child, but with an even more stacked roster with the signing of free agent Marvin Williams who will likely provide more bench depth for their wing shooters, they’ll look to finish their already league-best first half of the season against a struggling Pacers team that’s lost it’s last five games.

Milwaukee is riding high into the break with the NBA’s best record, and have the utmost opportunity to better that exemplary mark with a game on the road against a competitive Pacers squad that is perfectly healthy, as superstar point guard Victor Oladipo made his debut last week. Per Milwaukee’s last result, which was just a stomping of the slipping Sacramento Kings via their 123-111 win inside the Fiserv Forum, while featuring a stellar a comeback from their supporting cast and an efficient combined effort from Khris Middleton and Eric Bledsoe’s totaled 56 points.

Their opponent tonight: their old buddy and teammate Malcolm Brogdon and their potential second-round opponent Indiana. Fittingly, the Bucks have obliterated this Pacers team twice this season, so we’ll see if Oladipo provides any extra pop to make this a fair fight. But, in the midst of this five-game skid, they’ve blown a massive, 25-point lead to the Raptors inside the Scotiabank arena, while losing to them two nights later in the Bankers Life Fieldhouse. And, they most recently dropped a tight 105-106 game against the Brooklyn Nets, thanks to a late pullup jumper courtesy of Spencer Dinwiddie.

Perhaps the most alarming stat of the night for Indiana: their starting backcourt of Oladipo and Brogdon went just 8-25 for the game combined en route to 18 points. Now, that’s a rather unfair assessment of the one-time All-Star Oladipo, who returned back to the hardwood for the first time in nearly a year, but for them to gain an upset over the league’s most dominant team, they’ll have to pull out all the stops to find advantages on the offensive end to get buckets against Milwaukee’s forest-like size and length.

Tip-off is going down for this one at 7:30 p.m. ET, on ESPN.

The Spurs Well Balanced Offensive Attack Defeats Oklahoma City (114-106)

The Spurs Well Balanced Offensive Attack Defeats Oklahoma City (114-106)

Featured

The Thunder came into this game against the San Antonio Spurs following a tough loss against Boston. Oklahoma City was looking to bounce back and get into the winning column again against the 22-31 Spurs Tuesday night. The game started as a nightmare for the Thunder as it seemed as though they weren’t able to hit anything inside or outside. You can tell they tried to establish themselves in the paint early with Steven Adams but besides that gameplan it was tough. It wasn’t like the Spurs were defending the Thunder at a high level it was OKC beating themselves. The Thunder were missing shots that they usually hit and struggled to make some of the easy baskets that they’ve come accustom to making. Chris Paul was the player that was consistent all night for the Thunder as he finished with 31 points on the night. The Spurs had no answer for CP3 and his willingness to attack the paint and create. Chris Paul was able to take advantage of the opposing point guards with his wisdom and pump fakes. Chris Paul was able to outsmart Derrick White and Dejounte Murray on a couple of plays on his way to his 31 points. The problem with Chris doing that was the fact that Murray and the Spurs got the last laugh.

The OKC Thunder had 5 players in double figures tonight but it seemed as though a lot of the points were in the second half while they were in comeback mode. Tonight Shai Gilgeous-Alexander finished with 17 points on the night and didn’t have his usual game. A lot of the calls that Shai would get on a nightly basis weren’t there tonight against the Spurs. Sometimes the Spurs forced Shai into passing the ball out to other teammates because of the double teams on the perimeter. The Spurs played Shai differently and the second-year man will bounce back and adjust to the way that teams play him. Shai has been one of the leaders of this team and has shown that he can handle the heavy load given to him. Shai only took 11 shots on the night and wasn’t able to get into a true groove. Shai always continues to get better and he usually makes his teammates better as well as always. Tonight wasn’t Danilo Gallinari’s night as he struggled from the field as well shooting 4/16 from the field. When Gallinari struggles from the field it’s tough for the Thunder to get anything going on the offensive end. The Spurs were forcing Gallinari to put the ball on the floor and he rushed a lot of shots. The shots weren’t falling for the Thunder and by the time they got it within a close margin, it was a foul game. The 6th Man of the Year candidate Dennis Schröder only had 14 points on the night and wasn’t able to give that spark that he usually plays with tonight. The Spurs defended the perimeter very well and they also had some size on Dennis that didn’t help him during the game. This Thunder team has played above expectations and there will be some games like this but look for them to bounce back before the All-Star Break in New Orleans.

The Spurs had the lead for pretty much the whole night against the Thunder as LaMarcus Aldridge was hitting shots that only he can make. Those shots included stepbacks, fadeaways, and off the dribble moves that looked unguardable. Aldridge has always been one of those players that has great games against the Thunder in his career and that didn’t change. Tonight Aldridge had 25 points and was able to get his shot off no matter who was guarding him. The Thunder had Adams, Noel, and Muscala on Aldridge tonight and it worked defensively throughout the game until it mattered in the clutch. When you have that height and skill mixed together it’s always tough to make the adjustments to succeed throughout the game. We all knew that Aldridge would step up and play lights out but his running mate tonight was Dejounte Murray. Tonight Murray was able to attack the paint and he was able to use his mid-range game to his advantage. It seemed like Murray was the quickest guard on the court tonight and his first step was unguardable. Murray showed off the improvement on his mid-range jumper and finished the game with 25 points as well. The Thunder had no answer for Murray down the stretch as he was able to take over the game with his jumper and his willingness on the defensive end. Murray has come a long way since his injury and he put that on full display tonight in OKC. The Spurs had 4 players that were in double figures tonight and were making shot after shot with a hand in their faces. Sometimes the ball goes in and sometimes it doesn’t but tonight was San Antonio’s night.

SR – NBA Prime Time Preview: Boston Celtics at Houston Rockets

SR – NBA Prime Time Preview: Boston Celtics at Houston Rockets

Featured

The borderline-elite Boston Celtics start their short week with a plane ride down south to take on the Rockets in H-Town, with the game’s official tip-off taking place at 9:30 p.m. ET on TNT.

For the second leg of Tuesday’s TNT doubleheader, Boston looks to test themselves against the two-headed monster that is this Houston Rockets backcourt composed of MVP candidate James Harden and his buddy and second-time-around teammate Russell Westbrook. In what might be the most difficult defensive responsibility asked of these new-look Celtics this year, they’ll be tasked with finding a solution against a guard duo that leads the NBA in backcourt scoring with 62.5 points per game, 14.6 assists per game, and 14.5 rebounds per game.

And of those two guards, just take an educated guess on who garners most of the attention. Harden, the 2018 league’s Most Valuable Player, is on the clear and unparalleled path to clutching his third scoring title. But, even with he and Westbrook’s combined scoring expertise, the Rockets took some serious bumps to both their roster and overall record in losing their only center Clint Capela to the Atlanta Hawks from last Thursday’s trade deadline, and their 1-2 record without him in Rockets head coach Mike D’Antoni’s adapted style of small ball — sliding the team-tallest 6’5 PJ Tucker into the center spot — not working quite in their favor so far.

But that doesn’t make the five Houston defenders on the floor immediate liabilities, of course. In his Rockets debut, Robert Covington was complicit in the second-half defensive demolition of the Los Angeles Lakers last Thursday night while also contributing 14 points in 30 minutes.

But what is to be examined tonight won’t just be Daniel Theis and Enes Kanter’s significant height advantage but the suddenly exuberant two-way proficiency of first-time All-Star Jayson Tatum (22.1 ppg.), or should I say, this week’s Eastern Conference Player of the Week with his 29.8 ppg., the third-highest scoring total in the Eastern Conference. And just last week, his accomplice in the frontcourt, Jaylen Brown (20.3 ppg.), achieved the same accolade. Along with Gordon Hayward (17.2 ppg.) and Kemba Walker (22.0 ppg.), this team has been the talk of the town as a four-man combination that can post double-digits on a scoring sheet on any given night.

And tonight, the Celtics can’t wait to see how their third-ranked defense stacks up against Houston’s offensive blitz from their backcourt.
