Report: Kristaps Porzingis To Be Offered 5-Year, $158 Million Mavs Offer

Featured

As the NBA’s free agent bonanza sets itself up for next week, the first big monetary number has been released to the public and for the Dallas Mavericks, they can only hope it is enough to deter their newly-acquired 7’3 dynamo of a center in Kristaps Porzingis from seeking other destinations this offseason.

Per a report from Yahoo’s Shams Charania, the Mavs are likely to offer their restricted free agent (RFA) a five-year max contract worth over $158 Million. Charania reported that both Porzingis’s camp and the Mavericks brass will meet when free agency opens up this Sunday.

Porzingis was shipped from New York to the Mavericks via a trade with the Knicks back in early February. Porzingis, who was taking off the 2018-19 season to rehab a torn ACL suffered a season ago, grew disgruntled with the Knicks organization and requested a trade due to the team’s downward future as a losing franchise. The Knicks ended up fulfilling his request to be out of the Big Apple by trading him, Tim Hardaway Jr., Courtney Lee and Trey Burke to the Mavs while getting the prospective second-year guard Dennis Smith Jr. and tenured big man DeAndre Jordan.

Granted, if the Knicks denied Porzingis’s request, he would have been able to either accept a one-year qualifying offer for $4.5 million for 2019-20 with zero guaranteed money after the season or sign a five-year extension worth $158 million. Now, it is becoming apparent that the All-Star center will get those $158 Million — but in Dallas instead of New York.

Keep in mind: the Mavericks have little to no shortage of cap space to use up, and reports are quickly spreading that the franchise could make a run at unrestricted free agent Kemba Walker of the Charlotte Hornets. Porzingis’ cap hold is significantly less than the first year of a new deal would be, so the Mavericks can keep an additional $10 million of cap free if they hold off on inking a new deal until after they pursue other additions.

Looking at the roster for the Mavericks, it is hard to ignore how talented they can become. Recently announced as the 2019 Kia Rookie of the Year, Luka Doncic is ready and welcome to share the hardwood with another European franchise corner piece. Supposedly, if you were to ask the Mavs on how to build a championship roster around an international talent, Mark Cuban can give you a clear-cut answer on the schematics.

2011 was the first time in over five years that the Mavs visited a championship series, and if Porzingis looks to be a fixture in Texas for the rest of his career, the chances are very high for 2011 to not be the last.

The Big Baller Banned from ESPN

The Big Baller Banned from ESPN

NBA

Yet again, Lavar Ball has stirred up controversy in the media. The Big Baller Brand CEO has ruffled some feathers due to a response he gave to a question asked to him by Molly Qerim on ESPN’s First Take.

Many have sided with Molly Qerim in that Lavar’s comments were inappropriate. Others have sided with Lavar in his argument that he meant nothing sexually suggestive in his comments. Molly Qerim publicly addressed Lavar’s comments on TMZ.  She said that she had no say on if Lavar Ball would be banned from coming back on ESPN’s shows as a guest and that it was “above her paygrade”. Lavar publicly addressed his comments saying “I don’t even have to respond to that on the fact that I meant no sexual intent. Nothing on the fact that ‘switch gears’ means change topics to me. Her mind in the gutter if she think of something else. Only time I hit on her is if she’s breaking in my house, and I mistake her for the boogeyman.”

Richard Deitsch of The Athletic reported that an ESPN spokesmen responded that there are “no plans moving forward” when asked if they would use Lavar as an on-air guest, an on-the-record source for digital, or a background source for ESPN.

Recently, NFL Star Wide Receiver Dez Bryant, commented on the situation via Twitter. He tweeted at Molly Qerim “I’m late but I just seen the ESPN video of you and Lavar Ball… just being real.. you owe that man an apology straight up… I didn’t even sense foul play from him… you dramatically overreacted.. mature women like Doris Burke need those jobs.”

It’s still unsure if Lavar Ball is banned from ESPN indefinitely. Jalen Rose took to Instagram live to address the situation briefly. He responded to accusations that him and Molly got Lavar banned by saying, “we work there we don’t own the company, this man has two professional sons you don’t think he’s going to be back on television with an opinion?”

Dame Lillard and Marvin Bagley III Battle For Rap Supremacy

Dame Lillard and Marvin Bagley III Battle For Rap Supremacy

Featured

Though the NBA season has come to a close and the draft has been settled the offseason drama has just started. While on First Take Thursday with Stephen A. Smith and Max Kellerman, Marvin Bagley–the Sacramento Kings Center and number 2 pick in the 2018 NBA Draft–simply responded to questions of his rap ability. Kellerman asked if he was better than Damian Lillard (to which any sensible rapper would respond yes–why would you admit to being lesser?) and if he would battle Lillard on the set of First Take. The exchange went like this:

Max Kellerman: Roy Jones, who was a colleague of mine at HBO Boxing, played me a clip of you freestyling in the hallway. And it has been my opinion since then that the best MC in the NBA is either you or Damian Lillard. But who is the best MC in the NBA?

Marvin Bagley III: Man, me. Me. Man, I love music. I love music. So, I’m gonna go with myself.

MK: Would you ever battle Damian Lillard?

MBIII: Yeah. For sure.

Harmless enough, right? Dame immediately took to Twitter to announce that he wanted all the smoke. Bagley fired the first shots with a track “No Debate,” a laudable effort over excellent production but with only light shots at the Second Team All-NBA guard. Bagley is a fine lyricist but much like his effort on the defensive end he could still use a bit of work.

But as we saw this postseason, Dame is no stranger to quieting the doubters, within hours Dame Dolla dropped a freestyle entitled “MARVINNNNNN???” over Drake’s Pusha T diss track “Duppy Freestyle,” filled with both insight and insults, Dame drained bucket after bucket on the young King in embarrassing fashion.

Virtually everyone on Twitter, even the notoriously grumpy Joe Budden, decided Dame won the battle. However that wasn’t enough for the Portland Trailblazers star, just hours after that freestyle Dolla came through once again with a 40 foot bomb to end it all called “Bye Bye” using his own iconic series winner as the single art.

To add insult(s) to injury, this time he did it over Drake’s “Back to Back” instrumental hitting Bagley with a double dose of Frizzy. Lillard’s second round of roasting was cruel and unnecessary like dunking in the last seconds of an already decided game. Now Bagley’s only choice is to dunk on Lillard during the regular season or start rap beef with Max Kellerman for putting him in this position.

Notable NBA Free Agents 2019 Part 3 of 3

Notable NBA Free Agents 2019 Part 3 of 3

NBA

Similarly to the Milwaukee Bucks, the Philadelphia 76ers made in early exit in the 2019 Playoffs also losing to the Toronto Raptors in a pivotal game 7. That being said, the 76ers made an extensive amount of trades that currently fill out this roster. From big names such as Jimmy Butler and quite literally “big names” like Boban Marjanovic, the 76ers had a roster that seemed suited for a deep playoff run. However, at this time, many of the big names acquired throughout the course of the season find themselves wondering where they will end up in 2020. Marjanovic, Butler, and Tobias Harris are only a few out of the twelve players on the 76ers roster that are listed as Unrestricted Free Agents this offseason. Marjanovic is one of the few that seeks to stay with Philadelphia, while Butler and Harris may be projected to explore their options this offseason. Lakers’ Guard Josh Hart stated that it’d be “cool” if the Lakers developed a superteam, with Butler and Irving joining the team. There were initial reports of Butler potentially heading to Dallas, but realized there would be some form of difficulty between Butler and face of the new face of the organization Luka Doncic. Tobias Harris has little rumors flying around the media compared to Butler, but reports have shown that the Brooklyn Nets have showed interest in Harris, as they were also a team removed from the playoffs in the first round against the 76ers.

The San Antonio Spurs were the other half of the Kawhi Leonard trade, receiving Raptors SG Demar DeRozan. They made an early exit in the Playoffs against the Denver Nuggets in a 7-game series. Out of the entire Spurs roster, 6 players are becoming Free Agents, but perhaps the biggest name out of that group is Rudy Gay. Gay has always been known as a solid wing player throughout his career ever since he came into the league with the Memphis Grizzlies in 2006 after being traded from the Houston Rockets. There have been multiple reports from the Spurs organization that they do in fact want Rudy back in a Spurs uniform, stating that he played a key role this past season. There is a large chance that Gay stays with the Spurs, but it is unclear of what his intentions are this offseason.

At the time of this article being written, the Raptors are up against the Golden State Warriors in the NBA Finals 3-1. If the Raptors manage to pull off a win at home, they will win the NBA Championship for the first time all at the same time it being their first time in the Finals at all. Win or lose this NBA Finals, this team must be considered one of the best teams in the league this year. The trade between the Spurs and the Raptors had a lot of fans wondering who got the better end of that deal, but a this point that is left for another discussion. What is up for discussion, however, is the big names in Toronto that will be Free Agents, NBA Champions or not. Recently acquire Danny Green, Kawhi Leonard, and Marc Gasol were all players that were all acquired within the past year. But it is also true that these contracts will be up at the end of this season. Despite his experience and veteran presence on a team, Green has no real rumors going around in terms of Free Agency, which makes sense since all eyes around the series they are in rather than where he will be in months to come. This can also be said for Marc Gasol, minus the amount of Playoff experience he has in comparison to teammate Danny Green. However, the same cannot be said for starting SF for the Raptors, Kawhi Leonard. Teams around the league, both players and staff are watching the NBA Finals to of course see who wins the championship, but to also watch one of the biggest Free Agents this offseason next to Kyrie Irving and Anthony Davis. Leonard is referred to as a priority to several other teams around the league, the Clippers, Lakers, and Knicks to name a few. If the Raptors do win the championship this year, it is less likely to see Leonard exploring his options this offseason. At this point, only time may tell where we may see Kawhi in 2020.

2019 NBA Draft – How Long Will This Year’s Draft Prospects Stay With Their Respective Sneaker Brands? A look back at past rookie endorsement deals.

2019 NBA Draft – How Long Will This Year’s Draft Prospects Stay With Their Respective Sneaker Brands? A look back at past rookie endorsement deals.

Featured

Tonight, the best young basketball players in the world will walk across that stage after having their names called in the 2019 NBA Draft. Whether it be the “one-and-dones,” overseas prospects, 3-4 year college players, or prep school prodigy – each player in the draft pool has their eyes set on this night and what their future holds. With great talent in such young male athletes, comes great marketability. Top dog brands like Nike, Adidas, and Under Armour are vying to sign the next big face of the league. Resurgent brands to the likes of New Balance, Puma, and And1 are trying their hand to convince 19-21 year-olds to go against the mold. Overseas companies like Anta, Li-Ning and PEAK will most likely pitch these future NBA players of how much focus will be on them within their brand opposed to if they signed with a bigger company.

Most NBA rookies will sign some sort of sneaker/apparel endorsement deal, with the lottery picks having more extensive contracts and more guaranteed money. With that being said though, just how long will these newly acquired NBA players last with their respective brands? These initial contracts can be somewhat short in length and once the bright lights wear off and a young 20 year-old realizes he’s stuck wearing Reebok ZigTechs every year, a change will soon be desired. Yes the money from smaller brands can be great, but then you come to the realization that you can’t wear Kobes, Lebrons, Hardens, Jordans, KD’s, PG’s, etc. anymore. We take a look back at some notable draft picks from years past who signed head scratching sneaker endorsement deals right out of the gate and then eventually jumped ship.

JOHN WALL – Drafted (2010) – Signed with Reebok (2010-2013) – Currently signed with Adidas

If there’s a player who’s had quite the rollercoaster of sneaker endorsement stops, it’s John Wall. Wall was quick to sign with Reebok immediately after declaring for the NBA Draft back in 2010. He even wore his first signature sneaker with them during the summer league. This was an interesting move considering Reebok had little to no stake with players choosing to wear their product when it came to basketball. Reebok must’ve paid Wall a pretty penny to sway him away from the likes of Nike and Adidas (at the time). Wall left Reebok in 2013 and joined Adidas (who has owned the Reebok brand since 2005). However, when Wall’s contract with Adidas expired on September 30th, 2015 he opted to test the waters for wearing other brand’s shoes. Wall was initially seen wearing Kobe’s with tape over the swoosh due to his lingering contractual obligations to the Three Stripes. Then when he was officially a sneaker free agent he would be seen wearing Jordan retros, multiple Kobe models, and PG’s. John Wall has since re-joined the Adidas brand and said he’s looking forward to a “fresh start.”

DWAYNE WADE – Drafted (2003) – Signed with Converse (2003-2009) – Currently signed with Li-Ning

Dwayne Wade entered the league in 2003 and unlike his notable counterparts Lebron James (Nike) and Carmelo Anthony (Team Jordan), Wade opted to sign with Converse and be the face of that brand’s basketball division. He had six signature sneakers with Converse from 2003-2009 but then signed with The Jordan Brand in the summer of 2009. He would go onto have two signature shoes with the Jumpman but then left in 2012 to join Chinese company Li-Ning. Wade has been with Li-Ning ever since and has had many iterations of signature shoes with them.

STEPH CURRY – Drafted (2009) – Signed with Nike (2009-2013) – Currently signed with Under Armour

No one thought Steph Curry would blow up to become the player he is now, including Nike. Back in ’13 when Nike was pitching to re-sign Curry they just didn’t do a stand-up job and simply dropped the ball. They weren’t treating Curry like how they treated Kyrie Irving and Anthony Davis. When Curry met with Under Armour he, and his father, could tell they genuinely wanted him to be a part of their brand and would represent him in a combined effort to gravitate towards his fans. Steph never had a signature shoe with Nike, just P.E. versions of the Hyperdunk, Hyperfuse, Hyperize, etc., but since then Curry has had six signature shoes with UA including off-court spinoffs as well.

NERLENS NOEL – Drafted (2013) – Signed with Reebok (2013-2014) – Currently a sneaker free agent (wears Nikes)

Reebok must have all of these young draft prospect’s phone numbers on speed dial because they seem to get a lot of the new stars in the league (used to). Unfortunately for RBK, their partnerships with these newly acquired NBA players never seem to last long anymore. Gone are the days of Allen Iverson, Shaquille O’Neal, Dee Brown, and Dominique Wilkins – back when Reebok won over consumers within the basketball market. Nerlens Noel was highly touted out of high school and after his one year at Kentucky was a lottery pick in the 2013 NBA Draft. He was supposed to be a part of the effort to “rejuvenate” the Reebok basketball line, along with Isaiah Thomas and Jason Terry. Trying to make Reebok basketball footwear relevant again was always making new versions of old Iverson’s (the Questions) or making an “updated” version of their pump technology (seen above), and this never equated to success in the market.

So where will this year’s top NBA picks end up in sneaker free agency? How long will these players stay with the brands that they initially sign with? Lebron James’ lifetime deal with Nike is basically an anomaly at this point. Although it may seem like Kobe Bryant has been with the Swoosh for life, even he was signed with Adidas for a hot minute during his first few years in the league. Ja Morant, projected second overall pick, made the first move out of 2019’s prospects by signing with Nike. Will Zion follow suit and choose the “Check” over rivals Adidas and Under Armour? Does it come down to just the money with these young stars? – as was probably the case for a few of the athletes above like Wall and Noel. This 2019 NBA Draft class will surely shake up the world of sneaker endorsements.
