Houston Texans vs. Kansas City Chiefs

The day begins with a matchup of a pair of quarterbacks who were taken just two picks after each other in the 2017 NFL Draft as Deshaun Watson and the Houston Texans head into Arrowhead Stadium to face Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs.

We already saw this exact matchup happen before in the regular season when the Texans pulled off a surprising 31-24 road win over the Chiefs in Week 6. Though neither QB had a signature day in that game—Watson was 30/42 for 280 yards, three total touchdowns, and two interceptions and Mahomes went 19/35 for 273 yards, three passing touchdowns, and one interception—it was a fun back-and-forth game between the two teams.

However, today’s game isn’t just one of 16, the stakes are higher and it is now ”win or go home” for these franchises.

For Kansas City, they are looking to make amends for losing at home in the AFC Championship game in last year’s playoffs. The Chiefs finished 12-4 and thanks to a Week 17 upset was able to get a bye to the divisional round. After running through the league like a buzzsaw a season ago, they really weren’t considered the best team in the NFL at any point this season.

They have a chance to change that though. With the Tennessee Titans pulling off another upset road victory yesterday, the winner of this game is guaranteed a home game with a trip to the Super Bowl on the line. Houston’s defense has been inconsistent all year and Mahomes has been waiting for a shot at postseason redemption. If they can jump out to a big lead early look for them to keep their foot on the pedal and really make a statement.

For the Texans, they are trying to show that they are a different team now. Bill O’Brien made a rash of moves before the season began as the team’s de facto general manager in hopes of seeing his team make that jump into contender status.

Their first playoff game looked like it would be more of the same old song as they fell behind 16-0 but they were able to storm back and advance. Could this be the season that things start to change for Houston?

We’ll find out today. Watson is likely to have a full array of weapons with DeAndre Hopkins, Will Fuller V, and Kenny Stills all on track to play. The team has also experienced a renaissance at running back with the dual threat of Carlos Hyde and Duke Johnson fortifying the ground game.

Offensively, the talent is there for this team to hang around with the high-powered unit on the other side of the field. Where the test will come is how their defense responds. J.J. Watt will look to harass Mahomes in the pocket but they’ll need their secondary to be able to corral and contain the sheer speed of Kansas City’s wide receivers. Tyreek Hill, Mecole Hardman, Sammy Watkins, Demarcus Robinson, and even Travis Kelce is fast for his size and position.

Keeping those guys in front and making sure they are brought down on Iraq contact will be a big part of this game.

PREDICTION: CHIEFS 41 , Texans 27

Seattle Seahawks vs. Green Bay Packers

The second game of the day also gives us a great QB matchup as Russell Wilson and Aaron Rodgers will get to go at it at the frozen tundra that is Lambeau Field. The weather in Wisconsin calls for a high of 22 degrees at kickoff and there was already some snow in the area yesterday. The divisional round nightcap will give us some good old fashion football weather for sure.

First-year head coach Matt LaFleur has helped lead his team to an impressive 13-3 record and it’s been thanks to the team’s ability to be a much more balanced offense. Rodgers is still as dynamic as a passer as we have in this league but the development of Aaron Jones and the team’s willingness to play a run-first style has brought them to this point.

Jones is no one-trick pony, he’s helped out in the passing game too and with Davante Adams seemingly being the only member of the receiving corps that Rodgers is in-sync with, having a threat out of the backfield like Jones has been crucial at times.

The Packers made noise early in the year as their defense stepped up while the offense worked out its kinks. Yet, as the season wore on more questions than answers arose from that group. They are going to need their edge rushers Za’Darius Smith and Preston Smith to make a big impact on this game. Green Bay doesn’t normally spend big money on non-Packers in free agency but they did just that to bring both Smiths into the fold the last offseason. Keeping Wilson from extending plays where Green Bay has good coverage will be vital.

They’ll also need an answer for D.K. Metcalf as the rookie’s size is a problem for a secondary that is relatively small. Wilson has confidence that Metcalf will come down with any 50/50 ball so expect a few of those to be up for grabs during this game.

Seattle meanwhile will hope Jadeveon Clowney is back to full-strength and can get pressure on Rodgers to force him off his spots or throw the ball before he is ready. Rodgers is crafty as a runner and the Seahawks have to be prepared for him to make a play when nothing looks open. It will be interesting to see if the team opts to load the box or not. Forcing Rodgers to throw doesn’t sound like the best idea on paper but if the run game isn’t producing it could alter LaFleur’s offensive gameplan and playcalling early.

Both of these teams are looking to recapture the good times from the previous decade when they were the clear top teams in a weaker NFC. Now in 2020, their quarterbacks have gone from young studs to grizzled veterans in what feels like the blink of an eye.

Whichever can keep their group a step ahead of the other will have a shot at making it back to the Super Bowl for the first time in years. A trip to San Francisco first is the only thing that would remain in their path.

PREDICTION: PACKERS 27 , Seahawks 17

Minnesota Vikings @ San Francisco 49ers

The Minnesota Vikings will be heading into San Francisco today trying to pull off another miracle. Last weekend against the New Orleans Saints on the road no one gave them a chance in that one. The Vikings knew they were a true underdog and went into NOLA and upset the Saints on the legs of Dalvin Cook and the arm of Kirk Cousins. The Minnesota Vikings have all-pro type players on the offensive end that can get the job done. If the Vikings are going to get the job done they will need to continue to set the tone with Dalvin Cook on the ground. Last weekend against the Saints Cook rushed 28 times for 94 yards with 2 touchdowns. The way that Dalvin Cook has been running opens up the passing game for Kirk Cousins so that he has some time to get the ball to Thielen and Diggs. Kirk Cousins will have to get the ball to Diggs or Thielen if he’s going to be successful in the passing game. Last week Adam Thielen had 7 catches for 129 yards receiving and Stefon Diggs had only 2 catches for 18 yards. Both will need to bring their A+ game today to get the Vikings to the NFC Championship game. The 49ers defense will be coming after Cousins all day long with that front seven so look for the Cousins to hit his safety blanket Dalvin Cook in the screen pass plays. When the Vikings have the run game going they’re tough to beat but they will be depending on the defense this game. Look for Griffin and Hunter to try and get after Jimmy Garoppolo so they can slow down that passing attack. It’s going to be a tough day for the Vikings secondary with Sanders, Kittle, and Samuels emerging as true weapons on every down. The toughest part about that is the 49ers have stud receivers and have a 3 headed running back by committee Mostert, Breida, and Coleman who you don’t know will have the hot hand. So if the Vikings are going to be successful they will need a full game of all phases of the defense showing up as they did in NOLA. This Vikings team is loaded but have been inconsistent if they can get some turnovers on the defensive end to give their offense more opportunity anything is possible.

The 49ers are coming into this game healthy and have shown growth throughout the season as a unit. This team continues to get better on the offensive end and the defensive. The backbone of this team is their defense because once Nick Bosa gets to the quarterback he’s usually forcing a turnover or disrupting the play overall. When Bosa rushes the quarterback it causes mistakes and that’s where the 49ers have been able to have the upper advantage is in the takeaway department. Look for the pass rushers to get some pressure on Kirk Cousins to force him into turnovers and it also helps the 49ers that they have Richard Sherman over there at corner. When people face Richard Sherman they barely throw to his side because of his IQ and techniques. Look for the Vikings to try and go the other way to get the secondary receiver Diggs more looks if Sherman is all over Adam Theilen. The play of Jimmy Garoppolo has been special this season as he has been able to put this offense on his back throughout the season. On the season Jimmy G has thrown for 3,978 yards with 27 touchdowns so look for him to continue that air raid against the Vikings secondary that’s been a little shaky as of late. Xavier Rhodes hasn’t been himself as of late so look for the 49ers to try and attack him early in this game. The running game for the 49ers has been special all year long with their three running backs and it seems as if it doesn’t matter who gets the ball they produce. This 49ers team is extremely stacked and well balanced so if they can shake up Kirk Cousins early in this game with pressure it could be a long game for any Vikings fan. The 49ers will be at home and playing with a lot of energy with that crowd behind them. This will be a good game overall in San Francisco and it will come down to who makes the first mistake and who’s offense can capitalize on it first.

Score Prediction: Minnesota Vikings Win (24 – 17)

Tennessee Titans @ Baltimore Ravens

The Tennessee Titans knocked out the reigning defending SuperBowl Champion Patriots last weekend in Foxboro. Nobody saw this coming from the Titans as they were able to dominate the clock on the ground. Derrick Henry was a complete beast in that game against the New England Patriots last week rushing for 182 yards and a touchdown on 34 carries. It seems as if the Titans will be moving at the pace that Derrick Henry moves because he’s been able to carry the load and this team all season. Coming into tonight’s game against the Ravens the Titans will need to make sure that they get some production from Ryan Tannehill as the Ravens will try to load the box on Derrick Henry. There’s no way that Ryan Tannehill can throw for 72 yards and beat the Baltimore Ravens. This is the game where the Titans need that play-action working with Tannehill and AJ Brown because it can’t be all Henry. This has been a huge bounce-back season for Ryan Tannehill and to continue that success he will need to make the right decisions against one of the best defenses in the NFL. Tannehill will be trying to outsmart Marcus Peters and Earl Thomas in the passing game tonight. If Tannehill can produce while Derrick Henry is carrying defenders on his back the Titans can have a good chance to come out of this game victorious. The Titans defense will have their hands full so if they can do anything to stop or slow down Lamar Jackson it will help. It’s going to be a tough task for the Titans defense to stop the run game of Jackson and Ingram but they will need to limit big plays in this one. The Titans secondary has stepped up as of late but this will be their biggest task dealing with a dual-threat at quarterback who can deliver the ball to his weapons. If the Titans can limit Jackson to one dimension of his game whether it is the run or pass they can be successful but it will take a full team effort on both ends.

The Baltimore Ravens are the number 1 seed and it’s been because of the play of Lamar Jackson. It’s safe to say that he’s going to be the league MVP after the season is over. Lamar Jackson has 3,127 passing yards with 36 touchdowns in the air and 1,206 rushing yards with 7 touchdowns on the ground. Overall Jackson’s a cheat code and it’s going to be tough to slow down this high powered offense. The Titans will have their hands full because Jackson can throw the ball and run it like no other. Some of the plays Jackson made this season were video game-like and never seen before. Look for Jackson to get his game going early in this one as he leads the NFL’s most high powered offense to victory. Lamar Jackson by himself is already tough to stop but when he has Mark Ingram to run the RPO with it makes it even tougher. Mark Ingram has been a great addition to the Ravens this year and his ability to run as hard as anyone in the NFL gives Jackson the freedom to be himself. This RPO that the Ravens run is tricky and the Titans defense will be in trouble if they guess wrong. Another aspect of Lamar Jackson’s game that people slept on this season was his deep ball. Jackson has been able to find his playmakers in the secondary with ease because of the separation and size difference. The two players that Lamar Jackson looks for in this passing game are Hollywood Brown and Mark Andrews both are products of the Oklahoma Sooners NFL branch. The speed of Brown and the size of Andrews makes it tough on other teams and easier for Lamar Jackson with every pass to that receiver. The Ravens offense is dominant and the Titans will need to limit them or force them into turnovers to have any chance in this game. The Ravens defense will have their hands full on the ground trying to stop Derrick Henry and if they can stack the box that will make it easier to defend Tannehill. The Ravens want to make Ryan Tannehill beat them with his arm and not have the running game beat them. The Ravens are a complete team and have shown that all year long so look for that to continue at home against the Titans tonight.

Score Prediction: Baltimore Ravens Win (38- 14)

BREAKING NEWS: New York Giants hire Joe Judge as Head Coach

BREAKING NEWS: New York Giants hire Joe Judge as Head Coach

Featured

The coaching search floodgates have burst open as we now have our second hiring of the day. After missing out on Baylor’s (now Carolina’s) Matt Rhule, the New York Giants quickly moved on and picked New England Patriots special teams and wide receivers coach, Joe Judge, to be their next head coach according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter:

Judge was in high-demand this offseason as his alma mater, Mississippi State also offered him their head coach position according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport but he ultimately decided to take the Giants job:

Many wondered if the Patriots’ AFC Wild Card loss to the Tennessee Titans would be the end of the dynasty. While names like Tom Brady and Josh McDaniels were spoken of as potential defections from the franchise, Judge becomes the first member to leave New England.

Rapoport also mentions that Bill Belichick was a big fan of Judge and saw him as a future head coach:

As a first-time head coach, the rest of his staff will be critical and according to ESPN’s Ed Werder, the team has requested permission from the Dallas Cowboys to interview Jason Garrett as a potential offensive coordinator:

Awaiting Judge—besides a bunch of court-themed headlines and puns—is a team that has some talent (Saquon Barkley mainly) but is ultimately in the middle of a rebuild. New York has the number four pick in April’s 2020 NFL Draft, and since the team retained Dave Gettleman as its general manager it is unlikely that they will be looking for a quarterback after taking Daniel Jones last year.

Prior to joining the Patriots, Judge was also a special teams assistant at Alabama under Nick Saban from 2009 to 2011. The common belief in coaching circles is that the special teams coach is the member of the staff who operates most similarly to a head coach. John Harbaugh’s run with the Baltimore Ravens is one example of a special teams-to-head coach success story and the Giants are hoping that Judge will be another.

BREAKING NEWS: Carolina Panthers Hire Matt Rhule as Head Coach

BREAKING NEWS: Carolina Panthers Hire Matt Rhule as Head Coach

Featured

Another day, another coaching hire. This time it’s the Carolina Panthers who have found their man. They went to the college ranks and plucked Matt Rhule from Baylor according to Yahoo Sports’ Pete Thamel:

The news comes as a bit of surprise as the coaching search itinerary had Josh McDaniels visiting Carolina today and Rhule heading to his interview with the New York Giants. While McDaniels was one of the top candidates for the Panthers, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported that ownership met with Rhule in Waco, Texas and were convinced he was their guy afterwards. Rather than let him meet with the Giants—where he was the clubhouse leader for the job—the two sides agreed to a deal before his plane could head north:

Rhule has spent the past six seasons turning around programs like Temple (2013-16) and Baylor (2017-19) but before he became a head coach in college he worked on the 2012 Giants staff as an offensive line coach so he has some NFL experience in his background.

A detailed-oriented coach who has been praised for the culture he’s built at his two collegiate stops, Rhule and the Panthers will first need to decide whether or not Cam Newton is part of the team’s future. A Lisfranc injury cut the former MVP’s season short but neither Kyle Allen or Will Grier did enough to cement themselves as true starting-caliber quarterbacks going forward. Carolina also holds the seventh pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, which could give Rhule the opportunity to choose his own guy depending on how the board plays out.

BREAKING NEWS: Dallas Cowboys Intend to Hire Mike McCarthy as Their Next Head Coach

BREAKING NEWS: Dallas Cowboys Intend to Hire Mike McCarthy as Their Next Head Coach

Featured

Well that didn’t take long, one day after making the announcement that Jason Garrett would no longer be coaching the Dallas Cowboys, Fox Sports’ Jay Glazer reports that Jerry Jones has found his man in former Green Bay Packers head coach Mike McCarthy:

Earlier reports suggested that McCarthy had interviewed with Dallas prior to the team making their decision on Garrett official.

In McCarthy, Jones gets a proven and respected head coach who won Super Bowl XLV. During his 12 years with the Packers he amassed a record of 135-85-2 (postseason included).

An offensive-minded coach, he spent 12 years as either a quarterbacks coach or offensive coordinator with the Packers (1999), Kansas City Chiefs (1993-98), New Orleans Saints (2000-04), and San Francisco 49ers (2005).

With the Cowboys he will get to work with arguably his most talented group yet. Dallas has one of the best offensive lines in the NFL and the trio of Dak Prescott, Ezekiel Elliott, and Amari Cooper are among the top players at their positions currently.

It remains to be seen what this means for Kellen Moore who had breathed new life into this team in his first season as offensive coordinator but Charles Robinson if Yahoo Sports reported that whoever took this job would likely need to keep a few members of the previous staff and Moore’s name was included:

McCarthy has had success in Dallas before:

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that Jones and McCarthy spent Saturday night together:

A new era of Cowboys football has found their leader and it looks like Jones and the fans should continue to keep their championship aspirations alive and well as the team opted to bring in a veteran coach rather than a young up-and-comer.

BREAKING NEWS: Dallas Cowboys Inform Jason Garrett That He Will Not Return as Head Coach

BREAKING NEWS: Dallas Cowboys Inform Jason Garrett That He Will Not Return as Head Coach

Featured

According to Fox Sports’ Jay Glazer, the Dallas Cowboys have informed Jason Garrett that he has officially been fired as their head coach:

Nearly a week after rumors first started swirling that Garrett and the entire coaching staff would be let go, Jerry Jones finally ended the speculation and has let Garrett know he will not be returning.

ESPN’s Ed Werner reported one Thursday that the Cowboys were likely to make a change:

Timing can’t be overlooked here, after a full week of meetings between the two parties and no resolution, the move is now being made after three of the four 2019 Wild Card games have been played. In those games, teams with potential head coaching candidates (see: McDaniels, Josh) and Sean Payton’s New Orleans Saints all loss meaning that they will now be able to accept positions elsewhere prior to the completion of the NFL Playoffs.

Dallas—even though the decision to fire Garrett wasn’t official—has already conducted interviews with former Green Bay Packers head coach Mike McCarthy and former Cincinnati Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis.

The Cowboys have had the talent to be a Super Bowl contender but in Garrett’s decade-long tenure the team only won two postseason games. Whoever comes in next will have big expectations placed on their shoulders. Names like Oklahoma’s Lincoln Riley, Payton, Urban Meyer and other big names have been attached to this position, only time will tell what the Jones’ choose to do next.

Jones released the following statement tonight:
