Bobby Wagner Becomes Highest-Paid Linebacker in NFL

Bobby Wagner Becomes Highest-Paid Linebacker in NFL

Featured

With training camps officially underway for all 32 NFL teams, the storyline early has been about the players who didn’t show up. Pro Bowl players like Melvin Gordon, Ezekiel Elliott, Michael Thomas, Trent Williams, and Yannick Ngakoue have opted to start the 2019 season as holdouts.

In Seattle, the Seahawks have not had any drama with their elite players. On the contrary, the team just announced that they have agreed to a three-year, $54 million extension with stud linebacker, Bobby Wagner (according to Turner Sports’ Taylor Rooks). The All-Pro inside linebacker had made it known to the team that he was looking for a new deal as he was entering the final year of his previous contract.

Wagner was drafted by the Seahawks in the second round of the 2012 NFL Draft and ever since then his presence has been a staple of Seattle’s defense.

Last season, another big piece of the team’s defense, Earl Thomas, was upset over his lack of a new deal prior to the start of the season. No new contract was agreed upon and Thomas ended up fracturing his leg—and relationship with Pete Carroll—and ultimately ended up signing with the Baltimore Ravens this offseason.

By locking down Wagner before the season, any talk or supposed distraction about Wagner’s future in Seattle is gone and the team can fully focus on what’s happening on the field.

Becoming the highest paid linebacker in football isn’t the first accolade for Wagner this summer. A few weeks ago it was announced that he would be part of the Madden 20 “99 Club” (one of four players to be awarded with the game’s highest ranking).

With a slew of timely moves, the Utah Jazz has firmly placed themselves in championship contention. After acquiring Mike Conley via trade as well as Bojan Bogdanovic and Jeff Green in free agency the Jazz are deeper than ever. The Utah Jazz has a storied history with their highest peak coming during the Stockton/Malone days. Now, there’s a new heir apparent in Utah by the name Donovan Mitchell. With the Jazz set for a deep playoff run, it’s only right that Mitchell honors those that came before him. In homage, Spida’s new adidas shoe the D.O.N. Issue 1 is debuting a new colorway that honors the Jazz legend Karl Malone.

The shoe is a love letter to the glory days of the franchise. It’s covered in the team’s legendary purple and features the peaks of the Rocky Mountains on the midsole as a reference to the jerseys of yore. The coolest detail is the smallest, on the upper is a small postage stamp with Mitchell’s number representing both Mitchell and the NBA’s second all-time greatest score. There’s no word as to when the Mailman inspired kicks come out but keep it locked to find out.

Spurs Hire Tim Duncan As Assistant Head Coach

Spurs Hire Tim Duncan As Assistant Head Coach

Featured

While the precedent of former franchise greats serving as advisers to their younger mentees and current team members is not new, asking your Hall of Fame Power Forward to fulfill a critical coaching spot on your staff surely sounds like a new mountain to climb.

For the San Antonio Spurs, an organization and team enriched in the advice of its successful predecessors, asking a talent like The Big Fundamental to coach alongside his greatest adversary in Gregg Popovich seems like such a Spurs way of doing things.

The standard of treating excellence as a habit is a Spurs tradition, and on Monday afternoon, the Spurs organization seemed to uphold this tradition, as they announced to the NBA universe that Tim Duncan will rejoin sides with Gregg Popovich as an Assistant Coach for the 2019-2020 season. Duncan, a 1997 Wake Forest graduate, played 19 seasons with the Spurs and won five championships, two league MVP awards, three Finals MVPs, made 10 All-NBA First Teams and became the franchise leader in points before retiring in the summer of 2016.

The legendary Power Forward will join a voluminous coaching staff, along with a former assistant coach of his in Becky Hammon. Also joining the staff with Duncan will be Will Hardy, a former Spurs basketball operations intern that graduated from Williams College in 2010.

When asked about the familiarity of his new coaching acquisition, Popovich spoke highly of Duncan’s loyalty to the franchise he called home for nearly 20 years.

“It is only fitting, that after I served loyally for 19 years as Tim Duncan’s assistant, that he returns the favor,” Popovich said.

Spurs fans and fans of the big three will be more than excited to see their towering (literally and figuratively) example of class, leadership, and professionalism on the Spurs coaching staff for every minute of every game this upcoming season.
