SneakerReporter NBA Top 30 Teams: #13 Toronto Raptors

Featured

We’re officially less than two weeks, 13 days, out from the NBA Season and we’ve been getting our fair share of pre-season basketball so far. 10 teams went into battle today in some very exciting games. However, we’re moving onto our 13th spot on the Sneaker Reporter NBA Top 30, the Toronto Raptors.

13. Toronto Raptors: Can the 6ix reassert themselves as reigning NBA Champions?

The Toronto Raptors came off a historic season last year, earning their first NBA Championship in league history. The off-season for the Raptors was not as great, however, losing Kawhi Leonard and Danny Green to the Clippers and Lakers, respectively.

Despite having slight roster changes this off-season, it heavily impacts how the roster operates, especially due to the fact the Leonard held the biggest effect on the organization. This does not, however, mean that the Raptors are not in a position to succeed this upcoming season. With a very successful breakout season for Raptors forward Pascal Siakam, there seems to be a lot of potential upside for the organization. Also with the addition of newly acquired players such as Rondae Hollis-Jefferson and Stanley Johnson, the Raptors hope to fill the scoring void with a multitude of different options. Although there seems to be some overhang on the organization of Leonard and Green leaving, most seem to forget that the roster is still very solid without them. Marc Gasol, Serge Ibaka, Fred VanVleet, and Kyle Lowry are all very good players in their respective roles, and without Leonard in the line-up are given more opportunities to lead their team to victory.

Realistically, it’s hard to replace a franchise player, especially if that player is Kawhi Leonard. His abilities on both ends of the floor is what really separates him from a lot of other players in the league. So although the organization has made many additions in hopes of carrying that load, it’s hard to expect immediate success for this team. Losing Danny Green is a bit of a harsh blow as well, losing efficient scoring off the bench as well as an overall vocal leader for the team. It will be interesting to see, nonetheless, to see who on the Raptors roster steps up to try and fill the shoes of two players anyone would love to have on their respective team.

Looking at the big picture of this entire organization, the Raptors are still a very good team. It goes without saying, however, that their odds in repeating themselves as NBA Champions has decreased a fair amount. It should also be said that this doesn’t necessarily mean that there’s no chance we’ll see the Raptors contending for the title, for it seems almost certain that they can at least make the Playoffs again this year. Whatever the case may be, the Raptors have many young players that they can and should focus on developing if they won’t to put themselves in a similar position as they did in the 2018-2019 season.

OKC Thunder Lead By Shai Gilgeous-Alexander Beat The Dallas Mavericks (119-104)

OKC Thunder Lead By Shai Gilgeous-Alexander Beat The Dallas Mavericks (119-104)

Featured

The Oklahoma City Thunder opened up their preseason with a 3 pointer from Steven Adams. Yes, Steven Adams and the Thunder worked on that corner 3 pointers in practice. If OKC adds 3 point shooting to Steven Adams already dominate inside game it could be very scary for the NBA. Steven was a beast in the paint and it showed tonight as he scored 17 points. The evolution of his game could be something very special for this season. The Thunder were able to use Steven in the pick and roll with CP3 and Shai to perfection. The chemistry with the point guards and Steven was on full display as Billy Donovan went with the three-guard lineup of Shai, Dennis, and Chris to start the game. This was very effective and it caught the Dallas Mavericks off guard as they sometimes had bigs trying to stop the ball. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander had a game-high 24 points on the night and his points just sneak up on you. One thing about Shai’s game is the fact that he can get to the basket with ease and he’s shown a lot of growth in creating his own shot. The team has the ultimate confidence in Shai and has put the ball in his hands along with Chris Paul. Both of them together are a nice combination that can work to perfection with the way that Steven Adams has shown that he’s willing to play. This team is playing with house money and they won’t have to worry about the pressure of getting an insane amount of wins.

Chris Paul only played 17 minutes tonight but showed a lot of leadership and proved why he’s still one of the most elite guards in the league with his basketball IQ. Paul only had 6 points on the night against the Mavericks but this was a night for some of the young guys to shine like Darius Bazley. Darius had an amazing night in his first-ever NBA game and was playing with the utmost confidence. Bazley had 9 points but made the most of his opportunities and time on the court. The fact that he was confident in his jumper and attacking the rim was very key and shows that he can bring multiple things to the table for this team. Terrence Ferguson is another player that stood out in the minutes that he had tonight with 12 points and he was still slashing and defending at a high level. This Thunder team can be sneaky good and really turn a lot of heads in the NBA if they don’t take them seriously. Yes, the Mavericks were without Luka and Kristaps but they were able to still put up some big numbers. One thing that stood out is that the Thunder were in the bonus early and they were able to limit a lot of the Mavericks 3 point attempts and forced them to drive to the basket.

The Thunder play against the New Zealand Breakers next at home on Thursday night.

We’re officially at the halfway point for the SneakerReporter NBA Top 30, which means we’re 15 days away from the NBA Season kicking off. Next up on our lis, at the halfway point, we have the San Antonio Spurs.

15. San Antonio Spurs: Can the new era Spurs be just a dominant as the eras of old?

The San Antonio Spurs had themselves a solid season last year, placing 7th in the Western Conference at 48-34. They unfortunately made an early 1st-Round exit in a grueling 7-game series against the Denver Nuggets. The Spurs are hoping to take the motivation of last year and expand on it by building upon their Playoff push.

For the most part, the Spurs roster has fairly remained the same. The organization has made minor additions such as Demarre Carroll from the Brooklyn Nets, alongside a other names such as Trey Lyles, Luka Samanic, and Quinndary Weatherspoon. Despite not having the biggest names on their roster other than the obvious DeMar DeRozan, LaMarcus Aldridge, and Rudy Gay (to name a few), the Spurs are well-known for fitting players into their scheme, maximizing their styles of play within the offense. These veteran names that have been stated are expected and more than likely to do well this upcoming season, all the while the Spurs are hoping for more breakout seasons for their younger players such as Dejounte Murray, Lonnie Walker, and Derrick White.

As previously stated, the Spurs are hoping for their newly acquired players to fit into their scheme to ultimately make the Playoffs once against this upcoming season. One thing me personally, and most NBA fans, are interested in seeing is how Tim Duncan impacts the team as an Assistant Coach, particularly for the Spurs’ bigs, specifically LaMarcus Aldridge. There is potential for Duncan to help expand on Aldridge’s already decently all-around game. With Duncan’s help, we as NBA fans could be seeing a new form of the Parker, Ginobili, and Duncan trio in Mills, DeRozan, and Aldridge, with Gay on top of it. If the team happens to really mesh well this season, Spurs fans should have much to be excited about for the season to come.

If this season goes as the Spurs and Spurs fans want it to go, there’s a strong chance that we’ll see the Spurs as one of the middle seeds in the Western Conference for the NBA Playoffs, perhaps reaching another 50-win season. This would very much be an impressive feat for a team that is located in a very stacked Western Conference. We’ll all be excited to see how the season unfolds for Gregg Popovich and San Antonio.

Rob Gronkowski is Back in the NFL

Featured

Three-time Super Bowl champion and future Hall of Fame tight end, Rob Gronkowski is back in the NFL…as an analyst.

There have been rumors swirling ever since he retired in the offseason that Gronk would be unable to stay away from the game and they were partially correct it turns out.

Fox announced today that it would be adding the former New England Patriot to their NFL coverage just in time for the airing of Thursday Night Football featuring his former team facing off against the New York Giants on October 10.

He will be part of the pregame show alongside Terry Bradshaw, Michael Strahan, Tony Gonzalez, and Peter Schrager.

Gronkowski had the following to say about his new job, ā€œI’m extremely excited to be joining FOX Sports. For the past 25 years, they’ve offered viewers top-notch NFL programming from the field to the booth to the studio. Their deep talent roster is unmatched, which was important for me as I embark on this new chapter in my life because I’ll be able to learn from the best in the business.ā€

Brad Zager, Executive Producer and Executive Vice President, Head of Production and Operations, FOX Sports added, ā€œWe’re thrilled Rob chose FOX Sports for the next phase of his football life. ā€œHe is one of the most popular players to ever play the game and also one of the best tight ends in NFL history. His passion for the game and larger-than-life personality make him a perfect fit for FOX Sports.ā€

With the injuries piling up for the Giants, the game might be a dud but it’ll definitely be worth the watch to see the hi jinx that Gronk has in store.

BREAKING NEWS: Sam Darnold Will Start for the New York Jets in Week 6

BREAKING NEWS: Sam Darnold Will Start for the New York Jets in Week 6

Featured

The New York Jets were 0-1 when it was announced that starting quarterback Sam Darnold would be forced to miss a few weeks after contracting mononucleosis.

Darnold had to be quarantined from the rest of the team as he ran the risk of infecting other members of the franchise if he remained at the facility.

At first, the earliest return date projected him to come back after the team’s bye in Week 4.

In the weeks that have followed, he has made his way back and even took first-team repetitions during practice last week but was unable to get clearance to play in Week 5 against the Philadelphia Eagles.

The team announced today that he would had received that clearance and that he would be their starter for Week 6 against the Dallas Cowboys.

New York remains winless and the Cowboys are no slouches but having their franchise leader back should vastly change the way this team looks and performs on the field.
