Houston, Texas native and a graduate of famed HBCU, Southern University in Baton Rouge LA, Keith Jacobs has begun to crave a lane out for himself creating national attention in this Hip-Hop dominated era with single, ‘Saucy’ from his forthcoming still-untitled disc, due October 18th.

No stranger to love, Keith Jacobs often finds himself as the muse in which his lyrics flow, embodying the good and bad experiences of his life. He’s transparently honest and true to his music. It doesn’t come as a surprise that by sharing his art with the world, he wants us to not be afraid of being transparent in our relationships.

KEITH has the perfect tone, style, and groove that becomes the promise of stardom. Offering a throwback style of music that has been missing from the airwaves as of late. ‘Saucy’ is surely becoming “that song” at your favorite radio station.

Keith’s love of music would later allow him to cross paths with another Texas native, famed music producer Jean-Robert Redwine (Chris Brown, G-Easy, Mario, Ludacris, Zendaya, Tinashe). Together through Redwine’s custom imprint, Redwine Music, the creation of “Saucy” came to fruition.

Keith Jacobs will make his Essence Music Festival debut on Saturday, July 6th at the House of Blues in New Orleans.

Disney’s ‘The Lion King’ live-action adaptation is nearly weeks away from its theatrical premiere on July 19. The renaissance of Disney’s classic film has me asking the question why is Disney releasing live-action adaptation of their classic film?

As a kid so of what I thought to be the greatest cinematic experiences came from what are considered classic from the production of the Mouse House. These past few years with announcements of live-action adaptation… ‘Cinderella, Beauty and the Beast, Maleficent, Aladdin, The Lion King, and recently The Little Mermaid.’ I rejoiced at watching some of my favorite Disney movies again, some people felt the motivation behind these releases had to do with extending the copyright on these films.

I remember an episode of  ‘Adam Ruins Everything,’ that explained the rules of copyright law and public domain. In this episode show host, Adam touched on Disney’s continuous battle to keep their intellectual property ‘Mickey Mouse’ from being fair use. In short, once ‘Mickey’  hits the public domain anyone could use hit a likeness in anything. In order to stop this from happening Disney fought to practically make intellectual properties strictly belong to their creator(s).  This battle has only ended in extending copyright, seems a little hypocritical when Disney made its name in animated films based off of fairy tales in the public domain. As well as allegations that ‘The Lion King’ was a carbon copy of Japanese TV series ‘Kimba the White Lion’

Thanks to the Sonny Bono Copyright Protection Act, extending copyrights to an author’s lifetime plus 70 years for individual properties, and 125 years after creation or 95 years after publication for corporate works. So the theory is Disney could take a film like Disney’s ‘The Jungle Book’ originally released in 1967, by releasing a live-action version in 2016 pretty much identical to its predecessor with unique Disney elements would then extend ownership of the film 49 years to 2111.

This theory has been debuted an article in the Plagiarism Today speaking about the ‘Dumbo’ remake stating:

“The release of a brand-new Dumbo film does absolutely nothing to impact the copyright term on the original 1941 film. Under the current law, that film is scheduled to enter the public domain on January 1, 2037. That’s on January 1st the year following 95 years after its publication… The remake doesn’t change that nor does it matter if Disney re-releases the film or releases an updated version of the original. That term remains the same.”

What this means is the copyright is not extended for the original Disney films but, any new character elements introduced will not be usable and you will not be able to make copies of it (outside the boundaries of fair use) without a license. While Disney has made an effort to make the public domain almost nonexistent in the US there is no way for them to extend the copyrights on the original works by re-releasing live-action adaptation. 

So why are these Disney classic being re-released in live-action form? While the answer is simply money, the nostalgia of seeing your favorite film in a new form is luring enough. Tim Burton’s ‘Alice in Wonderland’ grossed over $300 million in North America. The success of this film began the trend of live-action remakes,many of those kids who watched films like ‘The Lion King’ in the ’90s are now parents and would love to share a piece of their childhood with their children.

The growth of streaming series is at an all-time high with services like Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime. Network MTV has moved its 33rd season of  “The Real World”  from television to the internet, exclusively available on Facebook Watch. The premise of the show is still the same, seven very diverse humans coexisting in the same house. So what happens when people stop being polite and start getting real.

As many networks offer the ability to view their dense catalog of the show through an app, the introduction of using Facebook Watch as a platform is genius. We live in an age whenever a new, beloved, or even hated series airs it tends to trend of social media platforms like Facebook/Twitter. The hive of people following the series is able to connect with a community of fans and share thoughts on episodes in real time as the show airs.

Now the genius part of putting a series like “The Real World” on Facebook is people can comment in real time while watching the episode with the housemates. For the first time in the shows history housemates have access to their personal cell phone, so fans can follow each individual’s Snapchat, Instagram, facebook, or twitter and get a feed of what’s going down in the house in real time. 

So let’s meet this diverse cast:

Meagan Melancon, 23 a deeply religious, conservative sports journalist from Baton Rouge, LA.

Dondre Randolph, 25 a pansexual, who’s a staunch conservative and Trump supporter from Huston, Texas.

Justin Blu, 26 is an activist and a graduate student of African American Studies from Atlanta, Georgia. His never dated outside his race and questions whether interracial marriages are good for the Black community. He considers himself a mentor to other young people.

Clint Wright, 28 a muscular influencer who loves to post shirtless selfies. Clint lives on his family’s farm in Potterville, Michigan.  His longing for what’s beyond the farm is why he went on the Real World.

Yasmin Almokhamad also known as Yassa , 27 a multimedia artist. She’s half Armenian, half Syrian and was raised as both Christian and Muslim. Despite her upbringing is identified as Queer and seems to be constantly amused by what’s unfolding around her.

Arely Avitua, 21 is a DACA recipient and mother at the age of 17, missing out on her teen years she believes this experience is an opportunity for her to go wild. Arely lives in constant fear that the DACA program could end, sending her back to Mexico and hopes to bring attention to the flaws of the program.

Tovah Marx, 26 a social worker from Scottdale, Arizona. She recently got out of an emotionally abusive relationship but is still looking for love.

The first episode starts like any season with the introduction to the housemates, from their different backgrounds like region, race, religion, and upbringing audience can quickly tell that there will be housemates bumping heads. When Dondre asked Justin his thoughts on the Colin Kaepernick situation every white person left the room and each minority stayed, viewers would soon find out that Tovah and Meagan didn’t comment because they felt they had no right to comment on black issues. This was an effort to stay PC (politically correct) but this experience will put every housemate in an uncomfortable conversation as they try to understand someone else’s situation.

The traditional model of promoting a film is slowly becoming a thing of the past as the rise of films premiere on streaming services such as Netflix. This opportunity is unlike any before, directors now have the choice to either shop the film to different studios who then may ask to make a change or you can go directly to Netflix with all creative control. Well, I’m happy to say, Chris Robinson, director of new Netflix movie “Beats” chooses the latter. “Beats” is a film that brings notice to the escalating violence in the streets of Chicago, while other films and series have done the same like Lena Waithe’s “The Chi” or Spike Lee’s “Chi-Raq.” As “the ultimate ode to Chicago’s South Side,” this film shines a light on the devastating effects of gang violence and tells the story of to have a family can come to grips with losing a loved one.

A teenage music prodigy August Monroe (Khalil Everage) was involved in a gang shooting leaving him traumatized and older sister died, directly following his actions of urinating on a wall tagged by a rival gang. Eighteen months later, August becomes secluded to a cramped apartment sitting in front of his sampler and keyboard, crafting hip-hop beats and hooks, as he did with his sister.  

He would later form an unlikely friendship with a struggling producer Romelo Reese (Anthony Anderson) who’s now a security guard at August’s high schools when his estranged wife, Vanessa (Emayatzy Corinealdi), a school administrator, asks him to track down no-show students. Once arriving at August’s door he hears the beats through the walls, stirring memories of his former life as a music producer and manager. He knows talent when he hears it and August has it.

Their first encounter didn’t go over very well, Romelo snuck into August room to compliment him on the beats by patting him on the back. August immediately has a panic attack seeing an unfamiliar face in his safe space his mother, Carla (Uzo Aduba) had to calm him down and kicked Romelo out of their house. The persistent of Romelo eventually grew on August as the two united by their mutual love of hip-hop, they try to free each other from the demons of their past and break into the city’s music scene.

The film itself puts the microscope on how people can be negatively affected by gang violence, August who was directly involved and watching a loved one died and being shot himself formed PTSD ( Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) symptoms, the fear of leaving his home, big crowds, and loud noises. His Mother Carla was an overprotective parent who didn’t want to lose another child, in turn, she became an enabler to August’s PTSD. Without the help of an outside force like Romelo pushing August to come out of the house and go after what he wants, his journey to normalcy would have never happened. The underlying meaning of the film is that sometimes it takes one person to push you towards the greatness they see in you.

“Beats” is available to stream on Netflix now.

As Drake is still enjoying the high of the Toronto Raptors winning an NBA championship and finally dropping those two tracks he promised fans last Thursday. To quote him “Still on top and these ni**as wanna swap…” to steal some of his shine, HipHop-N-More leaked a full version to an alternate version of Kanye West verse on Pusha-T’s Daytona track “What Would Meek Do? This version had lyrics aimed at both J. Cole and Drake setting Twitter a blazed.

The beef between Drake and Kayne has been while documented, subtle jabs, airing of dirty laundry, and dissing of one another shoe companies through lyrics, Kayne decided to play on the rumors of Drake leaving Nike for Adidas claiming he wears Yeezy sneakers while being signed to Nike:

Kanye hasn’t forgotten J. Cole “False prophets” which many feels was a diss, during an interview with Charlamagne, Kayne felt Cole was being a hater which addressed in these lines:

“I’m too complex for ComplexCon

You heard Cole on that song, he was tryna hate”

But Kanye shots at Nike didn’t stop there claiming the brand signed his protege Travis Scott and former manager Don C, because Adidas takeover was inevitable with Kayne on the roster:

“How can one man take a company down?

I can see Nike contemplatin’ that

“Like bro, we’re fucked, what’s the best plan?

I don’t know, hire Ye’s best man

Maybe sign Travis, sign Don C”
