Hocus Pocus 2 Review: This Halloween Season Some Legends Never Die

Hocus Pocus 2 Review: This Halloween Season Some Legends Never Die

Celebs

It’s been 29 years since someone lit the Black Flame Candle and resurrected the 17th-century sisters, and they are looking for revenge. Now it is up to three high-school students to stop the ravenous witches from wreaking a new kind of havoc on Salem before dawn on All Hallow’s Eve.

“Hocus Pocus 2” is a haunting sequel to the Halloween classic which brings back the delightfully wicked Sanderson sisters for more comedic mayhem. “Hocus Pocus 2” stars Bette Midler (“The First Wives Club,” “Beaches”), Sarah Jessica Parker (“Sex and the City,” “Divorce”), and Kathy Najimy (“Sister Act,” “Younger”), and is directed by Anne Fletcher (“Dumplin,’” “The Proposal”).

Also stars Whitney Peak (“Gossip Girl”), Belissa Escobedo (“American Horror Stories”), Lilia Buckingham (“Dirt”), Froy Gutierrez (“Teen Wolf”), Tony Hale (“Veep”), Sam Richardson (“The Tomorrow War”), Doug Jones (“The Shape of Water”), and  Hannah Waddingham (“Ted Lasso”).

Spoiler Alert - YouTube*Before we get into this review I’d like to issue a spoiler warning, as I will not tell you everything that has happened in this movie but I will highlight key plot points so watch the film before the review. You’ve been warned.

The beginning of this sequel takes us back to Salem in 19–  the origin of the wicked Sanderson sisters after the oldest sister rejects an arranged marriage to (blank) that the towns (Blank) have ordered to take place, a mob of the towns villagers gather at Sanderson’s door and shock that she would speak back to a man. The (Blank) threatens to take away

We see the Sanderson sisters as young girls, living in the Pilgrim community. As Winnie (Taylor Henderson) stomps furiously through the town after refusing the local clergyman, Reverend Traske (Tony Hale) who has decided that since the Sanderson parents are dead, Winnie must marry a young man from the village and the younger girls will be sent to live with another family. The girls run away to the forbidden forest, where they meet a very glamorous witch (Waddingham) who gives them one of the key props from the first movie, the book of spells with a human eyeball on the cover that really opens, and, I guess, sees.

Using Book for the first time to cast a curse on Reverend Traske setting his house ablaze, this was the start of what would be known as the most powerful coven in Salem’s history. In the present day, we follow two Salem teenagers, Becca (Whitney Peak) and Izzy (Belissa Escobedo). Who accidentally brings the witchy Sanderson sisters back to life while performing their yearly Halloween night ritual, it turns out the local magic store owner Gilbert (Richardson) gave them the other key prop from the first movie, a black candle. As he wanted to revive the sister after seeing the sisters flying in the sky back in 1993 and follow them to the graveyard where they met their demise in the original.

In an effort to abscond from the Sanderson’s sister and not become their next meal, Becca and Izzy lie about being adults that just look like kids because of the beauty products that promote give a women youthful look having kids souls already mixed in. This was joke was very funny because its so meta to how adult actors with youthful appearances can perform as high school students. The lie of both the girls and beauty products are brought to light after the sister caught a glance of their reflection in the mirror.

As high jinks contiunues to ensue as the girls race to stop the witches from kidnapping the town’s genial mayor (Tony Hale) and casting an immortality spell that would make them all-powerful, while also making amends with their former friend, the mayor’s daughter, Cassie (Lilia Buckingham), who has not been a part of the group lately because she’s been spending all her time with her boyfriend. We are give nods to the old movie in the form of familar faces and the power the sister have of enchanting people through song.

In Winifred’s quest to become the most powerful witch to enact her revenage on Salemshe loose her sister’s along the way and in order to be reunited with them she give up her power, so is this the last we’ve seen of the Sandersons or is this a trend for Disney to green light a Hocus Pocus 3 in the next 29 years?

Hocus Pocus is a cultural touchstone, following a moderately successful on its first release, it became a phenomenon on home video and cable and is now an annual tradition for many families, with parents who loved it in the ’90s sharing it with the next generation. Disney hit just the right spot between spooky and silly, with Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathy Najimy as a sort of witchy Three Stooges. Nearly 30 years later, “Hocus Pocus 2” should make fans of all generations happy, paying tribute to the original and adding some gentle updating and some welcome diversity, subtracting some violence. It is also a little bit sweeter.

Hocus Pocus 2 is a Disney+ Original movie, now streaming exclusively on Disney+. Produced by Lynn Harris (“King Richard,” “The Shallows”), with Ralph Winter (“Hocus Pocus,” “X-Men” franchise), David Kirschner (“Hocus Pocus,” “Chucky”), and Adam Shankman (“Disenchanted,” “Hairspray”) serving as executive producers.

The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers Season 2; Ice Breaker

The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers Season 2; Ice Breaker

Celebs

After winning back the Mighty Ducks team name last year, our squad-with-heart and their coach Alex Morrow (Lauren Graham) take to the road to attend an intense summer hockey institute in California run by charming yet hardcore former NHL player, Colin Cole (Josh Duhamel). It’s a place for kids to get excellent at the hockey — without school getting in the way. As our Ducks try to survive in this super-competitive environment, they’re faced with the question: Can you win summer?

The Ducks immediately stood out when they arrived late in a battered RV and interrupted Coach Colin Cole’s (Josh Duhamel) big speech welcoming the kids to the program. The camp mistakenly invited them, believing these Ducks to be Coach T’s team, winners of the Minnesota State Champion in hockey, not the Don’t Bothers won the rights to t the Ducks moniker in an underground hockey game.

Much like “D2: The Mighty Ducks”, being coached by someone who takes youth sports way too seriously and doesn’t agree with the Duck’s brand of hockey to just have fun on the ice. It’s another case of the underdogs being told to “don’t bother” and a group of kids who refuse to give up. However, in their first test during Coach Cole’s ice breaker game the goal is to score and prevent others from scoring. The squad struggled against tough competition, which included a confident player named A.J.(Connor DeWolfe), and while Evan, Sofi, and several others made it out fine, Nick (Maxwell Simkins) lagged far behind in second-to-last place. But that was still better than Coach Cole’s son, who came in dead last after missing a shot, much to his disappointment.

It was obvious throughout the first season the Ducks coach was a villain. Season two lets us know the lead counselor at the camp is going to have a similar mindset, but he also seems willing to adapt. The new Mighty Ducks had a lot to prove, especially now that they were no longer competing as a team. As Coach Cole pointed out, everyone was fighting for an individual spot in the world hockey showcase at the end of summer. (Note: If there’s going to be an international competition, does that mean we’ll also see Team Iceland?)

As Alex was trying to get the team to head back to Minnesota and enjoy their summer Evan, not one to back down from a challenge to prove an adult wrong convinces his teammates to stick it out as their summer officially begins tomorrow morning… at 5 am.

There’s also a pair of nice cameos at the beginning of the episode when we found out the Ice Palace has been condemned. They mention Bombay calling in the best construction worker he knows Fulton Reed (Elden Ratliff) and his fellow enforcer from the second and third movies, Dean Portman (Aaron Lohr) is now working construction with him, The Bash Brothers are still friends and working together.

This series looks like it’s going to be predictable, but given its target audience, that’s not really a bad thing. It’s great to have the Ducks back on the ice and let’s see how they win over the hockey counselor and Coach Cole this season. Check out the trailer below.

Diet Starts Monday x Curry Flow Cozy “Madisonville Maroons” Gives a Nods toHometown

Diet Starts Monday x Curry Flow Cozy “Madisonville Maroons” Gives a Nods toHometown

Featured

It didn’t take long for Diet Starts Monday (DSM) to reveal yet another sneaker collaboration. The Cozy was a silhouette that instantly stood out — specifically the sole. The overlapping and weaving of cord, the netting. It was a refreshing style that excited Davin.

The streetwear brand paying homage to its design founder, Davin Gentry’s midwest nostalgic iconography and Under Armour, has teamed up to remake and release the latest Curry Flow Cozy. The sneaker pulls inspiration from Gentry’s childhood basketball days and his high-school alma mater, Madisonville North Hopkins.
The shoe is made up of premium cream leather and Maroon suede with a debossed “Maroons” logo on the heel. Black and White striped webbing on the back pull tab mirrors the athletic trim of Gentry’s high-school jersey. A custom printed insole with the map of KY overlapped and a star showing Madisonville’s location with a definition of Maroon, “To place or leave in isolation or without hope of escape” complete the look.

Color: Baja/Maroon-White Style Code: 3026420-101 Release Date: 07/29/2022 Price: TBD

“I’ve had decades to toy with the idea of what a Madisonville North Hopkins High School shoe could look like. Initially I wanted ‘Madisonville’ on the shoe, but obviously that would take up a lot of real estate, which led to ‘Maroons,’ our mascot. I played with a couple different executions. Embroidery, print, debossing with print and the debossed print added a much more premium look and feel. The striped webbing pull tab as well as an embroidered tonal star on on the medial side of the toe box are both inspired by our jerseys. Premium maroon suede and cream leather, contrast stitching details and a co-branded DSM x Curry label on the tongue and a map of Kentucky on the insole with a star highlighting Madisonville, as well as a definition of a maroon: ‘To place or leave in isolation or without hope escape.’ I’m not sure what the school’s meaning of the Maroon is, but the definition chosen was the most fitting to me. It’s an unfortunate truth about where we’re from,” said Davin Gentry in an interview with Foot Wear News
Along with the DSM x Curry Flow Cozy Madisonville Maroons, the first of three sneakers from the DMS brand and Curry the second sneaker/ colorway will be the DSM x Curry 4 Flowtro “Tennis Ball,” and a third will be revealed later this year during the NBA season. The sneaker release also includes an unveiling of the newly renovated basketball court at Festus Claybon park, donated by Under Armour and designed by Davin.

The court is now yellow and black, Diet’s signature brand color with globe graphics at the center of the court also symbolizing the brand ethos “Madisonville to the World”.

“This court is a staple in the community. We all pretty much grew up around here. My old house is maybe 150 steps from the park. My granny’s house is a block from the other side of the park. My fifth grade football team practiced in a field at this park. It’s a gathering place for us, centrally located in the city. The first nice days of spring, we all rushed to the park after school to play ball. Same for the weekends. Just being able to activate there is legendary — and only the beginning,” said Davin Gentry in an interview with Foot Wear News.
The Diet Starts Monday x Curry Flow Cozy Madisonville Maroons is limited to 100 pairs and exclusively sold in Gentry’s hometown, the sneaker will be released on July 29th at the Summer Sizzler, a youth basketball tournament in Festus Claybon Park, the epicenter of basketball in Madisonville.
