2019 NBA Draft – How Long Will This Year’s Draft Prospects Stay With Their Respective Sneaker Brands? A look back at past rookie endorsement deals.

Featured

Tonight, the best young basketball players in the world will walk across that stage after having their names called in the 2019 NBA Draft. Whether it be the “one-and-dones,” overseas prospects, 3-4 year college players, or prep school prodigy – each player in the draft pool has their eyes set on this night and what their future holds. With great talent in such young male athletes, comes great marketability. Top dog brands like Nike, Adidas, and Under Armour are vying to sign the next big face of the league. Resurgent brands to the likes of New Balance, Puma, and And1 are trying their hand to convince 19-21 year-olds to go against the mold. Overseas companies like Anta, Li-Ning and PEAK will most likely pitch these future NBA players of how much focus will be on them within their brand opposed to if they signed with a bigger company.

Most NBA rookies will sign some sort of sneaker/apparel endorsement deal, with the lottery picks having more extensive contracts and more guaranteed money. With that being said though, just how long will these newly acquired NBA players last with their respective brands? These initial contracts can be somewhat short in length and once the bright lights wear off and a young 20 year-old realizes he’s stuck wearing Reebok ZigTechs every year, a change will soon be desired. Yes the money from smaller brands can be great, but then you come to the realization that you can’t wear Kobes, Lebrons, Hardens, Jordans, KD’s, PG’s, etc. anymore. We take a look back at some notable draft picks from years past who signed head scratching sneaker endorsement deals right out of the gate and then eventually jumped ship.

JOHN WALL – Drafted (2010) – Signed with Reebok (2010-2013) – Currently signed with Adidas

If there’s a player who’s had quite the rollercoaster of sneaker endorsement stops, it’s John Wall. Wall was quick to sign with Reebok immediately after declaring for the NBA Draft back in 2010. He even wore his first signature sneaker with them during the summer league. This was an interesting move considering Reebok had little to no stake with players choosing to wear their product when it came to basketball. Reebok must’ve paid Wall a pretty penny to sway him away from the likes of Nike and Adidas (at the time). Wall left Reebok in 2013 and joined Adidas (who has owned the Reebok brand since 2005). However, when Wall’s contract with Adidas expired on September 30th, 2015 he opted to test the waters for wearing other brand’s shoes. Wall was initially seen wearing Kobe’s with tape over the swoosh due to his lingering contractual obligations to the Three Stripes. Then when he was officially a sneaker free agent he would be seen wearing Jordan retros, multiple Kobe models, and PG’s. John Wall has since re-joined the Adidas brand and said he’s looking forward to a “fresh start.”

DWAYNE WADE – Drafted (2003) – Signed with Converse (2003-2009) – Currently signed with Li-Ning

Dwayne Wade entered the league in 2003 and unlike his notable counterparts Lebron James (Nike) and Carmelo Anthony (Team Jordan), Wade opted to sign with Converse and be the face of that brand’s basketball division. He had six signature sneakers with Converse from 2003-2009 but then signed with The Jordan Brand in the summer of 2009. He would go onto have two signature shoes with the Jumpman but then left in 2012 to join Chinese company Li-Ning. Wade has been with Li-Ning ever since and has had many iterations of signature shoes with them.

STEPH CURRY – Drafted (2009) – Signed with Nike (2009-2013) – Currently signed with Under Armour

No one thought Steph Curry would blow up to become the player he is now, including Nike. Back in ’13 when Nike was pitching to re-sign Curry they just didn’t do a stand-up job and simply dropped the ball. They weren’t treating Curry like how they treated Kyrie Irving and Anthony Davis. When Curry met with Under Armour he, and his father, could tell they genuinely wanted him to be a part of their brand and would represent him in a combined effort to gravitate towards his fans. Steph never had a signature shoe with Nike, just P.E. versions of the Hyperdunk, Hyperfuse, Hyperize, etc., but since then Curry has had six signature shoes with UA including off-court spinoffs as well.

NERLENS NOEL – Drafted (2013) – Signed with Reebok (2013-2014) – Currently a sneaker free agent (wears Nikes)

Reebok must have all of these young draft prospect’s phone numbers on speed dial because they seem to get a lot of the new stars in the league (used to). Unfortunately for RBK, their partnerships with these newly acquired NBA players never seem to last long anymore. Gone are the days of Allen Iverson, Shaquille O’Neal, Dee Brown, and Dominique Wilkins – back when Reebok won over consumers within the basketball market. Nerlens Noel was highly touted out of high school and after his one year at Kentucky was a lottery pick in the 2013 NBA Draft. He was supposed to be a part of the effort to “rejuvenate” the Reebok basketball line, along with Isaiah Thomas and Jason Terry. Trying to make Reebok basketball footwear relevant again was always making new versions of old Iverson’s (the Questions) or making an “updated” version of their pump technology (seen above), and this never equated to success in the market.

So where will this year’s top NBA picks end up in sneaker free agency? How long will these players stay with the brands that they initially sign with? Lebron James’ lifetime deal with Nike is basically an anomaly at this point. Although it may seem like Kobe Bryant has been with the Swoosh for life, even he was signed with Adidas for a hot minute during his first few years in the league. Ja Morant, projected second overall pick, made the first move out of 2019’s prospects by signing with Nike. Will Zion follow suit and choose the “Check” over rivals Adidas and Under Armour? Does it come down to just the money with these young stars? – as was probably the case for a few of the athletes above like Wall and Noel. This 2019 NBA Draft class will surely shake up the world of sneaker endorsements.

Netflix’s “Beats” Takes in Depth Look at the After Effects of Gang Violence

Netflix’s “Beats” Takes in Depth Look at the After Effects of Gang Violence

Celebs

The traditional model of promoting a film is slowly becoming a thing of the past as the rise of films premiere on streaming services such as Netflix. This opportunity is unlike any before, directors now have the choice to either shop the film to different studios who then may ask to make a change or you can go directly to Netflix with all creative control. Well, I’m happy to say, Chris Robinson, director of new Netflix movie “Beats” chooses the latter. “Beats” is a film that brings notice to the escalating violence in the streets of Chicago, while other films and series have done the same like Lena Waithe’s “The Chi” or Spike Lee’s “Chi-Raq.” As “the ultimate ode to Chicago’s South Side,” this film shines a light on the devastating effects of gang violence and tells the story of to have a family can come to grips with losing a loved one.

A teenage music prodigy August Monroe (Khalil Everage) was involved in a gang shooting leaving him traumatized and older sister died, directly following his actions of urinating on a wall tagged by a rival gang. Eighteen months later, August becomes secluded to a cramped apartment sitting in front of his sampler and keyboard, crafting hip-hop beats and hooks, as he did with his sister.

He would later form an unlikely friendship with a struggling producer Romelo Reese (Anthony Anderson) who’s now a security guard at August’s high schools when his estranged wife, Vanessa (Emayatzy Corinealdi), a school administrator, asks him to track down no-show students. Once arriving at August’s door he hears the beats through the walls, stirring memories of his former life as a music producer and manager. He knows talent when he hears it and August has it.

Their first encounter didn’t go over very well, Romelo snuck into August room to compliment him on the beats by patting him on the back. August immediately has a panic attack seeing an unfamiliar face in his safe space his mother, Carla (Uzo Aduba) had to calm him down and kicked Romelo out of their house. The persistent of Romelo eventually grew on August as the two united by their mutual love of hip-hop, they try to free each other from the demons of their past and break into the city’s music scene.

August, His love interest Niyah (Ashley Jackson), and Romelo Reese (Anthony Anderson)

The film itself puts the microscope on how people can be negatively affected by gang violence, August who was directly involved and watching a loved one died and being shot himself formed PTSD ( Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) symptoms, the fear of leaving his home, big crowds, and loud noises. His Mother Carla was an overprotective parent who didn’t want to lose another child, in turn, she became an enabler to August’s PTSD. Without the help of an outside force like Romelo pushing August to come out of the house and go after what he wants, his journey to normalcy would have never happened. The underlying meaning of the film is that sometimes it takes one person to push you towards the greatness they see in you.

“Beats” is available to stream on Netflix now.

NBA Free Agency: Mike Conley Traded To Utah Jazz

NBA Free Agency: Mike Conley Traded To Utah Jazz

Featured

Put the trade rumors to bed. The Mike Conley era has come to an end in Memphis, and it is looking like their former first-round selection by way of the 2007 NBA Draft will be replaced by a new first-round selection at the same position during Thursday evening’s NBA draft. The Grizzlies’ all-time leader in points will be heading West to help mold Quinn Snyder’s squad into a proverbial contender in the West.

Per a report from ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, Conley was dealt to the Utah Jazz in exchange for some pieces of bench depth in Grayson Allen, Jae Crowder, Kyle Korver, as well as the 23rd overall pick in this year’s draft and an additional first-round pick in next year’s draft.

Conley recently tweeted his thanks to the city of Memphis, Tennessee as he ventures to another chapter in his career.

The Grizzlies will get their first-round selection if the pick falls between the 8-14 range next year. If it does not, the same protection will apply in 2021. The protections decrease from there to top-6 six in 2022, top-3 in 2023 and top-1 in 2024 before converting to two second-round picks in 2025.

Upon the draft taking place tomorrow evening, it is more than likely that Memphis, who has the 2nd overall pick in this year’s draft will place the keys to the franchise in the hands of the versatile, self-dubbed “Point God”, Ja Morant. An overly-talented and abundantly-scouted point guard out of Murray State, Morant put up some pretty impressive numbers and highlights during his final year playing in the Ohio Valley Conference and drew some similarities to Russell Westbrook and Damian Lillard for his playmaking skills.

Looking forward to the upcoming season, the Jazz backcourt just got a lot better by pairing the young, athletic shooting guard in Donovan Mitchell to a defensive maestro in Conley, who earned NBA All-Defensive Second Team honors in 2013. Therefore, it is becoming increasingly evident that the Jazz will also see the departure of free-agent-to-be Ricky Rubio, their franchise point guard, to another destination since it is unlikely they can afford to keep both guards on one roster.

Jazz Head Coach Quinn Snyder will gain an intelligent, fundamentally sound point guard to run his offense, meaning that Mitchell will more than likely have more than enough floor spacing and additional coaching from Conley to develop into a perennial All-Star someday.

Moreover, Conley will fit right into Snyder’s Pick and Roll-heavy motion offense, and can expeditiously improve the abilities of other bigs in Rudy Gobert and Derrick Favors as well as skyrocket the numbers of their knockdown shooter in Joe Ingles during drive-kick scenarios.

Though the Jazz locker room may have gained another vocal presence on the floor and in the locker room, he does come at a substantial price. Conley will earn $32.5 million in 2019 through 20 and then $34.5 million the year after.

Both Memphis and Utah will not be able to make an official trade before June 6th. That is when the Jazz will be able to absorb the Conley deal with cap room left available. Because of this, the Jazz will end up selecting with the 23rd pick tomorrow night.

5 Teams Already Looking Into the Postseason

5 Teams Already Looking Into the Postseason

Featured

The playoffs already look promising to a few teams this season: some you expected and some you did not. Some teams with a rich postseason history are looking to continue their success from the years past, while some teams emerging with new talent are looking to change the direction of their ball clubs. This article is going to give you a briefing on five teams you can count on going far into the playoffs, by the way it looks as of now.

  1. Los Angeles Dodgers

This team should come with no surprise, as their success in the last few years is only looking to get better with new stars emerging and proven players keeping up the good work. The Dodgers won the most games in the MLB last season and were just one of three teams to break 100 wins (Indians and Astros accompany them). Losing to the Astros in the 2016-17 NLCS and the Astros in the 2017-18 World Series, Los Angeles could be looking to finally add a ring to their collection this season. They are currently tied for the best team in baseball with a 48-25 record behind Cody Bellinger, who is chasing an MVP award of his own. Injuries to key players is resulting in new guys stepping up to fill the roles. You can count on the Dodgers making a deep playoff run and look to be a world series contender once again.

  1. Minnesota Twins

This one might actually be a surprise, as they were the worst team in baseball just two years ago. Last year brought them a wild card game they would lose to the Yankees, which was their first playoff appearance since 2010. This year they have not only emerged as one of the best teams in baseball, but they are averaging a league-best 5.96 runs per game. This comes from the help of seven different players with double digit home runs this season. Shortstop Jorge Pollanco is leading the league in hits at 91, and pitcher Jake Odorizzi is among the league’s top five best ERA’s. If the twins can keep up this production, they could be destined for a long and promising postseason this year.

  1. Houston Astros

Another team that should not be shocking, the Astros have been top-tier the last few seasons. They won the World Series two years ago and have been carrying that momentum since. The last of three teams tied for the best record in baseball, they have recently lost four of their starters to injuries. While production could temporarily slow down, it should spike back up as these guys come back. Recalling prospect Yordan Alvarez has also seemed to help the team, as he’s producing good numbers from the DH spot. Losing to the Red Sox last year who went on to win the World Series, the Astros could be looking to take back their spot in late October this season.

  1. New York Yankees

You can’t talk postseason baseball without the Yankees being mentioned, who seem to always find their spot in the playoffs. Great success this season comes with a catch: they’ve only had their top five home run hitters from last season for an average of 12 games. Getting those guys back into the lineup could make an already dangerous Yankees team turn deadly by the end of the season. Reemergent of catcher Gary Sanchez and improved play from players stepping into the lineup in absence of their stars have also boosted statistics. The Yankees also welcomed Edwin Encarnacion in a trade from the Mariners last week, so they look to increase their power hitting even more. Trust the process with this New York team getting back to their full swing.

  1. Tampa Bay Rays

With a record creeping slightly behind the best teams in baseball, Tampa is on pace to make a splash in this year’s playoffs. 1.5 games behind the Yankees in their division, the Rays could use a wild card appearance to help fuel a postseason run. More than four batters who could be in talks for a hitting title and one of the league’s best fielding efficiencies have helped the Rays off to a great start. Tommy Pham also has one of the top ten highest on base percentages in the league, bringing much-needed reliability to the offense. This season will mark six years since their last playoff appearance, and they do not plan on making it seven. Keep a close eye on the Rays to take the AL East over the Yankees or break through a wild card game into the playoffs.
